US Uses Falklands Leverage to Pressure UK Over NATO Defense Spending Target

The Trump administration is reportedly using the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands as leverage to push the United Kingdom to increase its defense spending to meet NATO’s new 5% of GDP target, according to a report in *The Telegraph*.

A senior U.S. official told the newspaper that while Britain has strong potential as a defense partner, the defense investment plan announced by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in June was insufficient. The official suggested that the UK would face heightened scrutiny in Washington’s review of NATO allies’ commitment to defense spending targets. “I would expect the UK to receive special attention because it has so much potential,” the official stated. “We will therefore continue efforts to incentivize and enable the UK to step up in a major way.” When asked whether the U.S. could reconsider its stance on the Falkland Islands as part of this pressure, the official replied that discussions were “candid” and that no options were off the table to encourage greater burden-sharing within NATO.

The UK currently plans to spend 2.6% of its GDP on defense in fiscal 2026-27, rising to 2.7% from 2027-28 onward, according to the government’s June plan. Actual spending this year has reached 2.33%, still far below the proposed 5% target by 2035. The Trump administration’s push for increased defense spending is part of what officials describe as NATO 3.0, a new strategic era that would shift primary responsibility for Europe’s conventional defense to European nations and Canada. “We’ve seen the defense investment plan, and it is a step in the right direction. But a step in the right direction isn’t enough,” the official said. “Given the scale of challenges facing us and our allies, we need allies like the United Kingdom to step up in major, fundamental ways.”

The Falkland Islands remain a sensitive issue in UK-Argentina relations, with Argentina continuing to assert sovereignty claims over the territory. The timing of the U.S. pressure is notable given the close alignment between former President Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei, which has strengthened in recent months. Analysts suggest that U.S. leverage over the UK could include revisiting its historical support for the British position on the islands as part of broader efforts to secure greater defense commitments from NATO members.
