Poland, US Explore Permanent Military Bases: Defense Talks Underway

Polish and U.S. officials are discussing the potential establishment of several permanent American military bases in Poland, according to Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski. The talks follow a meeting between Zalewski and Elbridge Colby, the Pentagon’s policy chief, during the North Atlantic Council session at NATO headquarters in Brussels on August 27. Poland has proposed dispersing U.S. defense capabilities across multiple locations rather than concentrating them in a single site.

Poland first formally requested permanent U.S. military bases in June, after former President Donald Trump pledged to deploy an additional 5,000 troops to the country. Currently, around 10,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Poland. The Polish defense ministry has noted it spends approximately $15,000 per U.S. service member deployed there. However, Poland’s focus is not solely on increasing troop numbers but on securing advanced defense capabilities such as reconnaissance and command functions that the country currently lacks.

A permanent U.S. military presence in Poland would reflect long-term strategic interests rather than being a temporary response to regional conflicts, Zalewski emphasized. The discussions also touched on nuclear weapons logistics, though Poland has made clear it does not seek to host nuclear warheads on its soil. Instead, Poland aims to participate in NATO’s nuclear deterrence framework without stationing such weapons within its borders.

Poland’s Minister of National Defense, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, later clarified the country’s position on social media, stating that Poland remains committed to NATO’s Nuclear Sharing program and is exploring participation in a proposed European nuclear protective umbrella. The government’s stance on these matters is firm, he added.

The Pentagon has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the base discussions. Elbridge Colby’s visit to Belgium this week included meetings with European allies to discuss increasing defense spending, as part of a broader U.S. review of its European force posture. The review, launched in June by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, is assessing the future deployment of roughly 80,000 U.S. troops across Europe, with nearly half currently stationed in Germany.

Colby introduced a new strategic framework earlier this year, referred to as "NATO 3.0," aimed at reshaping allied defense contributions. Some European nations have expressed concerns that the review could lead to reductions in U.S. troop presence. Tensions over defense commitments were heightened in May when the Pentagon ordered the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany amid disputes between the Trump administration and German leadership over Iran-related policies.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte acknowledged progress in increasing allied defense spending but stressed that further efforts are needed. “Still, there is much more to be done and we'll get there,” Rutte said on Friday, highlighting ongoing efforts toward a more equitable distribution of security responsibilities.
