US Sanctions Italian Anti-Fascist Web Host A/I Collective as Terror Group

The Trump administration has designated the Italy-based digital service provider A/I Collective as a foreign terror group, a sweeping move that could force numerous American antifascist, anarchist, and far-left websites offline. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the sanctions, placing the privacy-focused group, also known as Autistici/Inventati, on the federal list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists.

The sanctions effectively prohibit U.S. citizens and domestic organizations from making financial transactions or providing support to the Italian collective. Violations carry severe legal penalties, including potential prison sentences of up to 20 years. The action targets the platform itself rather than specific individuals accused of committing violent acts.

Founded as a privacy-minded technology provider, the A/I Collective offers encrypted email, secure messaging, video streaming, and the widely used blogging platform noblogs.org. The platform hosts a broad network of activist groups globally. In the United States, users range from community media outlets, such as an anarchist radio program in North Carolina, to cultural events like the Seattle Anarchist Bookfair.

Civil liberties advocates warned that sanctioning hosting platforms sets a dangerous precedent for digital free speech and online privacy. Jillian York, director of international freedom of expression at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, cautioned that federal authorities are targeting the messenger. York emphasized that providing anonymous hosting services does not imply endorsement of every user's political conduct.

In an unsigned statement, the A/I Collective denied the U.S. government's allegations and announced it is exploring legal action. The collective stated that protesting, antifascism, and anticapitalism do not constitute terrorism, reaffirming its commitment to online anonymity and expression. Because the platform intentionally refrains from collecting personal user data, officials cannot determine how many U.S.-based websites will ultimately be impacted.

The State Department defended the decision, alleging that the collective provides technological tools explicitly designed to assist far-left terrorist networks in Europe and the United States. However, legal experts from the Center for Constitutional Rights warned that the designation could allow federal agencies to target domestic groups associated with the platform, expanding federal surveillance and restriction of political speech.
