Smith and Cox lead England fightback after tricky first day at Lord's

England staged a remarkable recovery on the opening day of the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s on Thursday, lifting their first innings from a precarious 77-4 to a competitive 248-9. Opener Jamie Smith top-scored with 61, while Jordan Cox contributed 55, guiding the hosts through a challenging session under overcast skies at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
England’s innings had stumbled early, as Pakistan’s seam attack exploited seam-friendly conditions to claim four wickets before tea. However, Smith and Cox steadied the ship with a crucial partnership of 108 runs, frustrating Pakistan’s bowlers and reviving England’s hopes of posting a defendable total. Smith, playing in only his second Test, showed composure beyond his experience, while Cox demonstrated solid technique against both pace and spin as the pair navigated a damp pitch that offered variable bounce and turn.
Despite their efforts, England finished just shy of a three-figure lead, with only Ollie Robinson remaining at the crease late on. Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi, will reflect on a mixed day—effective in unsettling England’s top order but unable to complete the innings. The visitors finished with nine wickets in hand when bad light ended play early, leaving them frustrated at not capitalizing fully on England’s early wobble.
The Lord’s pitch offered early assistance to the bowlers, particularly in the morning session when cloud cover was dense. Conditions improved slightly in the afternoon, allowing the England pair to play more freely. Smith’s innings was built around crisp driving through the off-side, while Cox played with measured aggression, rotating the strike and avoiding risky strokes. Their partnership shifted momentum firmly in England’s favor, even as run-scoring remained steady rather than explosive.
As the match moves into its second day, England will aim to push for a lead of around 150-200 runs to apply pressure on Pakistan’s batting lineup. The tourists, captained by Shan Masood, will target a strong start on Friday, with both Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq fit to resume. With conditions expected to remain favorable for seam bowling at the start of the second day, the battle for control of the Test hangs in the balance.
