Rizwan's stunning catch sends England reeling on Day 1 vs Pakistan
Muhammad Rizwan's breathtaking catch dismisses England's Emilio Gay early on Day 1 of the second Lord's Test against Pakistan.

England stumbled to a shaky start on day one of the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s on Thursday, with opener Emilio Gay dismissed for just eight runs after a stunning diving catch by Pakistan wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan. The early wicket further dented England’s hopes of recovering from their first-innings deficit in a match they must win to keep their hopes of retaining the Wisden Trophy alive.
A packed crowd at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground witnessed a moment of defensive brilliance when Rizwan, positioned behind the stumps, dived full-length to his right to pluck a sharp rising delivery from left-arm spinner Saeed Ajmal. The catch left Gay stranded in the middle, sparking an immediate collapse in England’s innings as they slipped to 31 for two in the ninth over.
England, who had chosen to bat first, were already under pressure having conceded a 120-run lead in the first Test at Old Trafford. With Pakistan’s aggressive bowling unit led by Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah continuing to exploit English vulnerabilities, Gay’s departure marked the beginning of what would become a painfully slow scoring session. England limped to 51 for three at lunch, with Joe Root the only recognised batsman to show any resistance.
Pakistan, who had earlier posted 304 all out in their first innings, dominated the morning session as their bowlers maintained relentless pressure. Ajmal, making his first appearance in the series, troubled the top order with sharp turn and variable bounce, while Afridi and Shah extracted steep bounce from a greenish Lord’s pitch. By tea, England had reached 93 for four, with Root and Ben Duckett attempting to steady the ship.
The second Test is not only crucial for England’s series hopes but also a chance for Pakistan to build on their first-innings advantage. A win would give them an unassailable 2-0 lead and hand them the Wisden Trophy for the first time since 2016.
Rizwan’s catch, described by pundits as “one of the catches of the summer,” became the defining moment of the morning. His athleticism and sharp reflexes underlined why he is regarded as one of the best wicketkeepers in modern cricket. For England, the loss of Gay so early underscored their top-order fragility and intensified the pressure on Root to lead a recovery.
The day’s play concluded with England at 137 for five, still 167 runs behind Pakistan’s first innings total. The second day promises a continued battle as England look to regroup and avoid an innings defeat.
