Neoconservative Pundits' Iran War Predictions Prove Flawed After Six Months
Neoconservative commentators like Ben Shapiro and Marc Thiessen predicted swift victory in the Iran War, but six months later, none of their stated objectives have been achieved.
The Trump administration's Iran war, launched in late February, has fallen far short of its initial promises, with none of the stated objectives achieved after six months. Despite early predictions of a swift victory, the conflict has dragged on, exposing flawed assumptions by prominent war supporters and leaving key questions about accountability unanswered.
Among the most vocal early advocates was conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, who hailed President Donald Trump's decision as the "bravest move by a president" in modern U.S. history. In a March 4 broadcast, Shapiro dismissed concerns about U.S. munitions shortages, asserting that stockpiles were "significant" and claiming Iranian missile launchers were running out. His optimism proved unfounded as the war persisted, with neither U.S. munitions nor Iranian military capabilities showing the predicted decline.
Neoconservative pundit Marc Thiessen, a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, similarly overestimated the campaign's prospects. In a March 3 Washington Post op-ed, Thiessen predicted the U.S. would dismantle Iran's leadership, nuclear program, and repression infrastructure within weeks, relying on an internal uprising to finish the job. "There is no need for a U.S. invasion force," he wrote, envisioning Iranian citizens as America's "boots on the ground." Instead, the conflict has stretched on, with Iran's regional influence—evidenced by recent attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz—remaining intact. The regime has not collapsed, nor has it become more pliable to U.S. demands.
Fox News hosts amplified the pro-war narrative, with Jesse Watters declaring on *The Five* that the U.S. was "crushing" Iran just days into the campaign. Watters went further, claiming the strikes had "tipped over" Venezuela and Iran, allowing the U.S. to "control almost the entire world oil market." His remarks echoed the premature triumphalism of Bush's 2003 "Mission Accomplished" speech aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, which preceded years of escalating conflict in Iraq.
The war's prolonged duration has underscored the disconnect between initial forecasts and reality. Trump's original timeline—weeks, not months—has given way to a stalemate, with neither side achieving decisive outcomes. Military analysts note that Iran's military posture remains largely unchanged, despite heavy U.S. strikes, while American munitions stockpiles have been depleted faster than anticipated. The conflict has also strained diplomatic efforts, with Iran less willing to engage in negotiations following the Trump administration's withdrawal from earlier agreements.
As the war enters its seventh month, critics argue that the architects of the campaign—including Shapiro, Thiessen, and Fox News personalities—failed to account for Iran's resilience or the unintended consequences of sustained airstrikes. The absence of a clear exit strategy has left analysts questioning whether the administration's goals were ever realistic or if strategic miscalculations were inevitable.
