Milo Yiannopoulos Detained by ICE After Overstaying Visa, Faces Deportation
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained conservative commentator Milo Yiannopoulos on Thursday at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Louisiana after he overstayed his visa, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Friday. The 42-year-old British national, who legally entered the U.S. on May 14, 2019, has been held in ICE custody pending deportation to the United Kingdom following a final removal order issued by a federal immigration judge on July 22.
Yiannopoulos failed to appear at the scheduled immigration hearing, resulting in the judge's decision. He remains in detention as removal proceedings continue, according to a DHS statement posted on X, formerly Twitter. The agency emphasized that individuals facing deportation may voluntarily depart the country through programs such as the CBP Home App, which offers financial assistance and travel arrangements for those who choose to leave.
A DHS spokesperson stated, "Being in detention is a choice. We encourage all illegal aliens to take control of their departure with the CBP Home App." The agency noted that it provides $3,000 and a free flight to individuals willing to self-deport, in an effort to streamline the process. Those who do not comply may face arrest and removal without the option to return legally.
Yiannopoulos gained prominence as a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and served as an editor at Breitbart News until his resignation in February 2017. His departure followed the surfacing of livestream comments in which he appeared to endorse sexual relationships between minors and adults. He later worked as an intern for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and as a personal assistant to rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. Ye is scheduled to perform at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Friday, though it is unclear if Yiannopoulos’ detention was related to the event.
Yiannopoulos has been an outspoken advocate for stricter immigration enforcement, including a 2025 social media post calling for ICE checkpoints at supermarkets and immediate deportation for those unable to prove legal status. His arrest has drawn reactions from political figures, including Laura Loomer, a conservative activist who has publicly clashed with Yiannopoulos for years. Loomer celebrated the detention on X, claiming she had been the first to report his alleged visa overstay and criticizing his past rhetoric.
The case highlights the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws, even against individuals who have built public personas around opposition to illegal immigration. Yiannopoulos now faces the consequences of his own visa violation, marking a reversal of fortune for a figure once known for his hardline stance on border security and deportation policies.
