Israeli Forces Detain Palestinian Workers While Settlers Attack West Bank Home

Israeli soldiers detained Palestinian construction workers in the West Bank village of Qusra after a Palestinian American family called police for protection against trespassing Israeli settlers, according to security video and family accounts. The incident comes amid growing international concern over escalating Israeli settler violence in the occupied West Bank and the role of the Israel Defense Forces in responding to attacks on Palestinian communities.

On August 4, Israeli settlers arrived on an ATV at the home of Loui Abu Ridi, a Palestinian American living in Ohio who owns property in Qusra. Workers hired by the family were erecting a protective fence around the house following months of vandalization and property damage. Loui's brother, Qusai Abu Ridi, said the family immediately called Israeli police for assistance.

Security camera footage shows IDF soldiers arriving at the property about half an hour after the call. Instead of detaining the trespassing settlers, soldiers allowed them to move freely around the property while ordering the Palestinian workers to stand against a wall with their hands raised. Soldiers bound and blindfolded two workers before removing them from the scene. The men were released several hours later without charge.

Qusai Abu Ridi stated that when workers told soldiers they had requested protection, a soldier commanded them to remain silent. Loui Abu Ridi, who watched the security feed live from the United States before the signal cut out, said the workers were detained simply for trying to protect the house.

Days later, on August 9, Israeli settlers initiated a siege on three homes in Qusra, including the Abu Ridi residence. Settlers blocked the main road, trapping families inside with limited access to food and water. Loui Abu Ridi subsequently traveled from Ohio to Qusra to protect his property, reporting that soldiers took over a neighboring house and restricted residents from moving freely.

Footage released by the Israeli human rights group Yesh Din showed Israeli soldiers inside the neighboring residence throwing women and children's clothing out of a balcony window. An IDF spokesperson acknowledged the video, stating that the conduct of the soldiers was inconsistent with the standards expected of IDF soldiers. The military added that troops remain stationed in Qusra to protect residents, prevent friction, and ensure security for both Palestinians and Israelis.

Human rights organizations and the United Nations have documented a sharp rise in settler violence across the West Bank, recording approximately 190 attacks per month during the first four months of the year. A UN report noted that increasing participation by security forces in settler attacks amounts to a de facto collapse of the distinction between settlers and soldiers.

The situation in Qusra has drawn international condemnation. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee issued a rare public rebuke of the escalating violence, describing the violent settlers as terrorists.
