Hovland leads Tour Championship as Scheffler and McIlroy impress

Viktor Hovland leads the Tour Championship by one stroke ahead of the final round, setting the stage for a potential FedEx Cup title defense in Atlanta. The event, the season-ending finale of the PGA Tour with a $40 million purse, will crown the FedEx Cup champion, a title Hovland secured last year. The Norwegian golfer, who began the third round tied for the lead, delivered a five-under-par 65, including birdies on the final two holes, to reach 15 under par. Ryan Gerard of the United States, who was also tied for the lead, finished one stroke behind after a 66, while Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy remain within striking distance.

Hovland’s round of 65 vaulted him to 15 under, extending his lead over Gerard. The American, who finished with a final-round 66, sits at 14 under. Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked player and the defending Tour Championship champion, carded a bogey-free 66 to reach 12 under, three strokes back. Meanwhile, McIlroy, a three-time FedEx Cup winner (2016, 2019, 2022), surged into contention with a six-birdie round of 63, the lowest score of the day, placing him five strokes behind Hovland at 10 under.

McIlroy’s round featured nine birdies, including three consecutive on holes 15, 16, and 17. The 37-year-old Northern Irishman credited improved putting for his resurgence. "I just left myself in better spots on the greens," McIlroy said. "I gave myself easier putts, putts that didn’t break two ways. When I got it rolling there on the back nine, every putt was like a cup right or a cup left."

Adam Scott of Australia, the 2004 Tour Championship winner, and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg both shot 66 to finish at 12 under, tied for third. Cameron Young, fresh off his Players Championship victory, sits at 10 under alongside McIlroy. England’s Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick, along with Tommy Fleetwood and Alex Fitzpatrick, trail further back at eight and seven under, respectively.

Robert MacIntyre of Scotland delivered a 63 in the opening group, the day’s second-lowest score, to climb to four under par, tied for 25th. The 29-man field, reduced after J.J. Spaun’s withdrawal, continues play at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, with the final round set to begin at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.
