Dan Lawrence shines as England close in on Test series win over Pakistan

Dan Lawrence struck an unbeaten half-century under challenging conditions to put England in total control of the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's, despite heavy rain limiting play on day three. Lawrence reached 50 off 64 balls before persistent weather interruptions brought an early end to Saturday's action. England closed on 177 for seven in their second innings, stretching their overall lead to a formidable 357 runs with two days remaining.

Weather severely disrupted proceedings in London, permitting only 24.5 overs throughout the entire day. Play did not start until mid-afternoon and faced multiple stoppages before umpires officially abandoned the session at 18:30 BST. The decision drew frustration and boos from the remaining crowd, as skies cleared significantly late in the evening when further play was still technically possible.

Despite the broken play and a seam-friendly pitch under heavy clouds, Lawrence showed resilience and aggression to consolidate England's dominant position. Resuming alongside opener Emilio Gay with England at 81 for three, Lawrence maneuvered through a hostile spell from the Pakistan seam attack. Gay was dismissed early after adding just one run to his overnight score, trapped lbw for 31 by a delivery from Muhammad Abbas that stayed unusually low off the surface.

Harry Brook then joined Lawrence to build a crucial 45-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Following Brook's departure, Lawrence accelerated his scoring by counter-attacking the opposition bowling. Pakistan's bowlers capitalized on the helpful surface, with Abbas leading the attack to finish the day with figures of three for 48. However, Pakistan faces a daunting task entering day four. Having been bowled out for just 110 in their first innings in response to England's 290, the visiting side will need a target of at least 358 runs to avoid a match and series defeat.

With a much better weather forecast expected for Sunday, England appears well positioned to wrap up victory and secure their first Test series win since 2024. Lawrence's vital contribution also significantly boosts his standing in a changing England lineup following the retirement of former captain Ben Stokes.
