Beluga Whales and Dolphins Rescued from Canadian Park Relocate to Spain
Six marine animals from a closed Canadian marine park have been relocated to Valencia's Oceanogràfic aquarium in Spain after an international rescue effort.

Beluga whales and dolphins rescued from a now-closed marine park in Canada have arrived safely at Oceanogràfic, Valencia’s premier aquarium in eastern Spain. The relocation effort, supported by animal welfare groups and conservationists, aims to provide long-term care for the six cetaceans after their original facility shut down over a year ago.
Oceanogràfic announced the animals’ arrival on 27 August, confirming that two belugas and four dolphins completed the journey without incident. Officials emphasized that the transfer was part of an international rescue mission to prevent euthanasia and ensure the creatures receive proper care in a more suitable environment.
The marine park in Canada, which had held the animals for years, closed in mid-2023 following pressure from animal rights organizations and changing regulations on cetacean captivity. Concerns over the animals’ well-being in a facility facing financial and operational challenges prompted urgent action from conservation groups, including the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) and local authorities.
Spanish authorities and veterinary experts oversaw the transportation process, ensuring the animals were monitored for stress and health throughout the journey. Oceanogràfic, part of the larger City of Arts and Sciences complex in Valencia, is recognized as one of Europe’s largest aquariums and has experience in caring for marine mammals.
While the aquarium has not yet provided a detailed timeline for public viewing or integration with existing animals, it confirmed that the belugas and dolphins are being acclimated to their new habitat. The facility follows strict animal welfare standards, and staff are trained in marine mammal care and conservation practices.
The relocation aligns with growing global trends toward phasing out cetacean captivity in entertainment-focused settings. Oceanogràfic has positioned itself as a sanctuary for marine life, supporting rescue and rehabilitation efforts worldwide. Conservationists hope this case will set a precedent for similar rescues in the future.
As the animals settle into their new home, Oceanogràfic continues to collaborate with international partners to monitor their health and behavior. The aquarium has pledged transparency in reporting progress, allowing the public and scientific community to follow their recovery.
This relocation underscores the ongoing debate about marine animal welfare and the role of aquariums in conservation versus entertainment.
