'A lot of pressure' - SSE Airtricity to increase gas prices by 19%

Northern Ireland’s largest natural gas provider, SSE Airtricity, will increase prices by nearly 19 percent starting October 1, affecting approximately 200,000 domestic and small business customers.
The price hike will add nearly £172 to the annual gas bill for a typical household in the greater Belfast and western gas network areas. SSE Airtricity attributed the decision to unprecedented volatility in global energy markets and sustained increases in wholesale gas prices.
Regulators pointed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as the primary catalyst for the market destabilization. Shipping curtailments in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical transit corridor handling about 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, have restricted global energy supplies. UK wholesale gas prices have effectively doubled to 169 pence per therm since the onset of military action involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
Colin Broomfield from the Utility Regulator described the price increase as difficult news for households and small businesses already facing wider cost pressures. He noted that the sustained rise in wholesale gas costs reflects six months of global energy market disruptions.
Raymond Gormley, head of energy policy at the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland, said the 19.2 percent increase was anticipated by industry analysts but would still represent a significant financial shock to consumers. Gormley noted that while local gas prices are currently about £60 higher than in the rest of the UK, they remain several hundred pounds cheaper than in the Republic of Ireland.
Small business owners warned that the higher utility costs would exacerbate an already challenging economic environment. Glenn Davis, owner of The Upper Crust restaurant in Larne, said energy price increases were placing immense strain on high street businesses. Davis reported that his daytime business currently pays about £400 a week for gas and £500 a week for electricity, describing the current trading climate as the toughest he has experienced in 30 years in the industry.
Domestic consumers also expressed concern regarding the cumulative impact of rising energy costs. Isobel Russell, a Larne resident living alone while her husband resides in a care home, reported feeling substantial pressure from uniform energy price increases. Both Russell and local resident Gawn Graham argued that the UK government should expand domestic oil and gas extraction in the North Sea to cushion consumers from international market volatility.
In response to widespread energy cost pressures, local government relief measures are scheduled for implementation. A Stormont scheme providing eligible households with a £100 voucher toward home heating oil costs will open for applications next month. Additionally, a separate scheme will automatically apply a discount of approximately £50 to all household electricity bills in October.
