50-Year-Old Amateur Footballer Craig Kirby Becomes Viral Sensation: Inspiring Millions
Craig Kirby, a 50-year-old amateur footballer, has gained viral fame for his inspiring TikTok videos, amassing millions of views and inspiring others.

Fifty-year-old amateur footballer Craig Kirby has become an unexpected viral sensation, using social media to share his continuing football journey and inspire others to stay active in later life. Based in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, Kirby’s TikTok and Instagram posts documenting his matches and training have amassed millions of views, offering a refreshing perspective on football beyond youth and professional levels.
Kirby’s online presence began modestly. His wife Lindsay started filming his matches at Whitworth Valley FC, initially for family and friends. One of his earliest videos, titled “Well beaten today. Not bad for 50 though,” has now been viewed nearly three million times. Since then, his content has continued to grow in popularity, with several videos surpassing one million views. His profile, ‘Football at 50’, now boasts around 30,000 followers on both platforms.
Kirby’s footballing story spans decades. As a teenager, he had trials with Blackburn Rovers but chose a career in the army, following in his father’s footsteps. Later, he considered professional opportunities with Cambridge United and Kettering but ultimately prioritised family stability. Now, playing in the Cheshire Veterans League Premier Division for Vauxhall Motors, he competes alongside former professionals, including former Newcastle striker Papiss Cissé, who has publicly praised Kirby’s skill.
His rise to online fame coincided with profound personal loss. In December 2023, Kirby’s 20-year-old son Sebastian died by suicide while serving in the Royal Air Force in Norway. Kirby initially considered retiring from football but decided to continue, finding solace on the pitch. “When I go on the pitch, it's about Seb,” he said. He has since spoken openly about grief and mental health, urging others to seek positive outlets and talk about their feelings.
Kirby’s positive attitude and authenticity have resonated widely. Fans often compare his style of play to legends like Zinedine Zidane, while many praise his dedication as an inspiration, especially for older players who feel they are “too old” to continue. He has also been called up to England’s over-50s national team, playing in several friendships and aiming to earn his first official cap in an upcoming match in Thailand.
Beyond personal achievement, Kirby uses his platform to encourage lifelong participation in sport. He stresses the importance of enjoyment over pressure, recalling his own carefree childhood playing football with friends. He acknowledges the challenges of modern youth pathways but advocates for fun and community in football at all ages.
In addition to his football commitments, Kirby trains regularly and even incorporates fitness challenges inspired by athletes like Usain Bolt, who recently joined his veterans’ team. His message remains consistent: action often matters more than intention. As he prepares for England duty, he continues to challenge perceptions of what it means to play football later in life.
For those struggling with grief or mental health, Kirby’s story highlights the value of positive coping strategies. He encourages open conversations and warns against harmful habits that can develop during difficult times.
Kirby’s journey shows that passion and perseverance know no age limit—and his growing online community is a testament to the power of sharing authentic stories.
