Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile detained amid treason claims
Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile detained by police on treason charges after disputing election results. Authorities allege armed insurgency plans.

Zambian police have detained opposition leader Brian Mundubile on treason charges following his disputed defeat in last month's presidential election.
Authorities allege Mundubile, whose National Restoration Party (NRPUP) won 38% of the vote compared to incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema's 60%, was involved in planning an armed insurgency. The opposition leader denies the accusations.
The arrest comes after security forces raided a Lusaka property linked to Mundubile the day after the August 13 poll, resulting in the death of former cabinet minister Given Lubinda and several other arrests. Police claimed to have uncovered evidence of military-style training at the location.
Following the raid, Mundubile took refuge in a secure location under international human rights protection due to alleged threats against him. His running mate, Makebi Zulu, was also detained Thursday after authorities pressured the United Nations to turn them over.
State broadcaster ZNBC reported that both men were being interviewed by law enforcement officers in the presence of their lawyers regarding "activities that police say have the potential to threaten national security."
The opposition's attempt to legally challenge the election results was blocked when courts were sealed off by authorities on the final day for filing appeals. Hichilema is scheduled to be sworn in for a second term on September 1.
Human rights organizations have expressed concern over the detentions and restrictions on legal challenges. The government maintains the actions were necessary for national security.
The arrests follow a pattern of increased tensions between Zambia's ruling party and opposition groups since the election. International observers have called for restraint and respect for democratic processes.
Police have not provided details on the specific evidence against Mundubile or Zulu. Both men remain in custody as investigations continue. Further court proceedings are expected in the coming days.
