Wireless brake technology is making its way into the cycling world, with a recent project transforming a fat-tire bicycle’s braking system. Berm Peak, a known innovator in bicycle modifications, has replaced a traditional hydraulic braking setup with a fully electronic, wireless system. The project aims to explore the potential of wireless braking—including enhanced safety features and simplified maintenance—while maintaining reliable performance on rough terrain.

The system relies on ESP32 microcontrollers to process braking inputs from wireless levers and send signals to actuators mounted on the front and rear brakes. Instead of hydraulic lines, Berm Peak used actuators originally designed for car door locks, paired with modified caliper springs to generate braking force. Early prototypes required refinements, including upgrades to higher-quality calipers, adjustments to actuator angles, and extended lever arms, to achieve consistent stopping power.

What sets this wireless braking system apart from conventional setups is its advanced functionality. Unlike traditional brakes, this electronic system incorporates an anti-lock braking system (ABS), allowing for controlled wheel lock prevention during hard stops—a feature more commonly seen in automobiles. The project also introduces a remote braking capability, enabling the rider to slow down children’s bikes from a distance, adding a layer of safety and control.

Additional features include a braking equalizer, which lets the rider adjust the proportion of front-to-rear braking force based on lever position, and a “derp” mode that delays brake engagement until a preset threshold is reached. These customizable settings offer greater adaptability depending on riding conditions and rider preference.

Berm Peak’s experiment reflects a broader trend in cycling toward electronic and wireless technologies, challenging the dominance of mechanical and hydraulic systems. While still in development, such innovations could redefine performance and safety standards in mountain biking and fat-tire riding.
