What we know after the big Grand Theft Auto 6 preview

Video game developer Rockstar has released a 26-minute preview of the highly anticipated title Grand Theft Auto 6, offering fans their first detailed look at gameplay after more than 18 months of silence. The footage debuted on Netflix before launching on YouTube, following a week of unauthorized leaks that the developer described as heartbreaking. Scheduled for release on Nov. 19, the title is expected to be one of the largest entertainment launches in history.
The extended preview focused on the single-player story mode, highlighting dual protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Camino, a couple central to the game's crime narrative. Viewers saw gameplay mechanics allowing players to switch between the two characters during missions, such as a segment where Jason lowered Lucia from a window to escape a drug bust. According to details shared with media outlet IGN, player choices will influence how the couple's relationship unfolds, though players can opt out of developing their bond.
The game takes place in Leonida, a fictionalized version of Florida that includes Vice City, a location previously featured in the franchise's 2002 entry. Industry observers and fans praised the title's photorealistic character models, lifelike movement, and diverse body types among non-playable background characters. The footage showcased detailed environments ranging from apartment interiors to underground clubs. Content creator TGG reported that Rockstar developers at their Edinburgh headquarters stated the new map is twice the size of Grand Theft Auto 5, though the company has not officially confirmed this detail.
Journalist Ryan McCaffrey noted that the title might be the best-looking game he had ever seen. The visual fidelity reflects Rockstar's extensive development cycle and substantial budget, which is believed to rank among the highest in video game industry history.
Despite visual and structural advancements, the preview demonstrated traditional franchise elements, including armed heists, high-speed vehicle pursuits, and satirical commentary on American culture. Rockstar has also expanded upon mechanics introduced in its 2018 title Red Dead Redemption 2, including an honor system where player actions dictate how non-player characters react to them.
The initial release will focus entirely on single-player gameplay, leaving expectations for an updated multiplayer mode to follow at a later date. The long-term commercial performance of the game will likely depend on its eventual online integration. Its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 5, released in 2013, has sold more than 200 million copies, supported by a lucrative online mode that remains one of the world's most popular titles. The entire franchise has sold approximately 500 million copies since launching in 1997.
The preview comes as Rockstar prepares to defend itself next month at an employment tribunal in Scotland. The developer faces allegations from former employees who claim they were illegally dismissed for attempting to organize a union. Rockstar has strongly denied the claims, stating the terminations were executed on grounds of gross misconduct.
