UK Govt Seeks Head of AI Strategy—AI Experience Not Required
The UK Cabinet Office is hiring a Head of Strategy and Engagement to lead AI policy for civil servants, but AI expertise isn’t mandatory. Learn why.
The UK Cabinet Office is recruiting a Head of Strategy and Engagement for its Digital, Data, Innovation and AI (DDI & AI) team, a role focused on shaping AI adoption among civil servants without requiring prior AI experience. The position, advertised with a salary up to £83,355, will guide approximately 550,000 government employees in developing AI and digital skills as Whitehall expands its artificial intelligence initiatives. The Cabinet Office’s Digital, Data, Innovation and AI team seeks a leader to craft long-term strategies, define policy positions, and collaborate with experts across government, industry, and academia.
The job posting emphasizes leadership, strategic thinking, and communication skills over technical AI expertise. While experience in digital, data, innovation, or AI is listed as desirable, the essential criteria focus on managing teams, building relationships, and driving cross-sector collaboration. The role is not designed for hands-on AI development but rather for overseeing skill-building initiatives and policy development to support the Civil Service’s AI-driven modernization efforts.
A Cabinet Office spokesperson clarified to The Telegraph that the position is not a technical AI role, stating that the team already includes specialists in AI and works extensively with external experts. This distinction follows a recent high-profile hiring for an AI and Innovation Director, a £163,000-a-year role requiring deep AI landscape knowledge to foster an "AI-first culture" across the Civil Service.
The government has accelerated AI adoption in public services, introducing tools like the Humphrey AI assistants to enhance productivity. A key priority remains upskilling civil servants in AI and digital technologies, a challenge the new Head of Strategy and Engagement will help address. The Cabinet Office’s hiring criteria suggest a broader approach to leadership in AI strategy, prioritizing governance and workforce development over technical implementation.
Applicants should note that while AI tools may assist in preparing applications, they must provide original examples of their experience. Submitting AI-generated content as one’s own could result in disqualification.
