British qualifier Toby Samuel secured his first Grand Slam victory at the US Open on Tuesday, delivering a commanding performance against Czech player Tomas Machac in a 6-2 6-3 6-2 win. The 23-year-old from Winchester, making his main-draw debut in New York, overcame a setback in each of his three qualifying matches earlier this week to advance to the second round. Samuel's impressive display featured 24 winners and 13 unforced errors, compared to Machac's 22 winners and 25 unforced errors.

Samuel's triumph marks a significant milestone in his career, following a challenging period in 2024 when he dropped to nearly 2,000th in the world rankings due to a bone bruise in his right arm. The British player has since climbed back to sit inside the top 100 in the live ATP rankings and earned $140,000 in prize money, the largest payday of his career. Samuel's recent success includes winning 36 of 39 matches on the ATP Challenger Tour to return to the top 300 last year, culminating in a run to the semi-finals at Eastbourne and a third Challenger title in Winnipeg.

In the women's draw, British number one Katie Boulter also advanced to the second round after battling past American wildcard Carol Young Suh Lee 6-4 3-6 6-0. Boulter's victory ensures that at least one British player will be present in the second round of the US Open.

Samuel's next challenge will be facing Czech 18th seed Jiri Lehecka in the second round. Meanwhile, British number two Cameron Norrie suffered a third consecutive first-round exit at a Grand Slam after losing to Frenchman Luca Van Assche in four sets. Norrie, the 29th seed, struggled with nerves early in the match and finished with 49 unforced errors, more than double his opponent's tally. He admitted, "I felt like I lost to myself today," highlighting the frustration of failing to maintain his energy and momentum throughout the match.
