Tennis Hall of Fame welcomes 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer

Roger Federer, the 20-time Grand Slam champion and one of tennis's most iconic figures, was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, on Saturday. Federer, who retired in 2022 after a storied career, joined broadcaster and journalist Mary Carillo in the 2024 induction class. During his emotional acceptance speech, he reflected on his lifelong relationship with the sport that shaped his legacy.

"I'm still writing my love letter to tennis," Federer told the assembled crowd, emphasizing that tennis had given him far more than just fame or titles. He acknowledged the International Tennis Hall of Fame as a pinnacle of honor, though he clarified that his pursuit was never about glory. "My goal was to spend my life doing something I love... with people who love it as much as I do," he said.

Federer's achievements include a men's-record eight Wimbledon titles, six Australian Opens, five U.S. Opens, and one French Open. He spent 310 weeks as world No. 1 and won 103 ATP Tour titles over his career. Known for his fluid style, signature headband, and meticulous preparation—including wearing two pairs of socks—he redefined modern tennis with his versatility and creativity.

In his speech, Federer shared insights into his on-court philosophy, recalling how he adapted his game through the years. "I used to play serve and volley, I had a transition game, I played way beyond the baseline sometimes," he said. He also referenced the "SABR" (Sneak Attack by Roger), a tactic that became part of his legacy.

Emotionally, Federer thanked those who supported him, including his coaches, medical team, and family—especially his wife, Mirka. He expressed pride in representing Switzerland, recalling his early days as a ball boy in Basel at age 13. "I'm proud that Switzerland is coming with me," he said.

Looking ahead, Federer stressed the importance of preserving tennis’s spirit amid its growing professionalism and global reach. "We all leave the court eventually, but the sport keeps evolving," he noted. He expressed hope that future players would retain an amateur spirit, stay true to themselves, and continue pushing the sport to new heights. "Do things with the game we've never seen before. Keep pushing... and keep getting better, better and better."

Federer also reflected on playing alongside legends like Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. While honoring his past, he emphasized optimism for tennis’s future.
