Tamil Nadu Launches ₹3.8 Crore Plan to Curb Drug Abuse Among Youth
Tamil Nadu govt to roll out a ₹3.8 crore drug‑abuse prevention plan for children and youth, plus new Anganwadis, senior citizen homes and disability support.
The Tamil Nadu government has announced a comprehensive State-level action plan to combat drug abuse among youth, with a special focus on rehabilitation and social reintegration. Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister K. Jegadeshwari outlined the initiative in the State Assembly on Monday, detailing a ₹3.80 crore allocation to prevent drug abuse and support recovery efforts.
The State-level drug abuse prevention plan will target children and young adults, providing early intervention and rehabilitation services. This follows growing concerns over substance abuse trends in Tamil Nadu, prompting the government to take proactive measures. The initiative aligns with broader social welfare policies under the leadership of the Tamil Nadu government.
In addition to the drug prevention plan, the Minister announced significant investments in childcare and early childhood development. The government will establish 300 new Anganwadis in urban areas at a cost of ₹51 crore. Select Anganwadis will undergo reconstruction at a cost of ₹12.96 crore. A pilot project has been launched to develop learning materials in Tamil and English for Anganwadi children in 50 blocks, with an allocation of ₹5.20 crore.
Support for senior citizens was also highlighted, with plans to establish a retirement residential facility through a public-private partnership model at an estimated cost of ₹14.50 crore. To enhance care in old age homes, the government will provide physiotherapy and palliative care services at a cost of ₹5.5 crore annually. These services aim to improve mobility, pain management, and overall health for elderly residents.
For persons with disabilities, the government will distribute petrol-powered scooters or battery-operated devices to individuals with dwarfism at a cost of ₹4 crore. Additionally, 10 new homes for persons with mental illness will be established through NGOs with an allocation of ₹1.82 crore. Vocational training programs will be introduced at 10 homes for persons with intellectual disabilities, supported by ₹1.77 crore in funding.
Two new homes for persons with spinal cord injuries will be established at a cost of ₹49 lakh. The Minister also announced that bus travel will be made free for all persons with disabilities and their companions, further promoting inclusivity and accessibility.
