Taliparamba MLA T.K. Govindan declines to comment on Pinarayi Vijayan’s criticism

Taliparamba MLA and former Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader T.K. Govindan has declined to immediately comment on sharp criticism directed at him by Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan during a public meeting in Mayyil, located in the Kannur district of Kerala.

According to statements from the legislator's office, Govindan chose to withhold his reaction as Vijayan is scheduled to address another public gathering in Taliparamba on Monday evening. Staff members indicated that the MLA is expected to review the remarks and issue a formal response following the conclusion of Vijayan's upcoming speech.

The controversy stems from an August 30 address in Mayyil, where Vijayan urged Left Democratic Front supporters and party cadre to recognize past political missteps and focus on rebuilding organizational strength in the constituency.

During his address, the former Chief Minister characterized Govindan as an opportunist and appealed to voters who supported him to align back with the party's ideological stance. Vijayan noted that while the party accepts its electoral defeat in Taliparamba and across Kerala, the election result should not be interpreted as a permanent outcome, calling on party members to remain united.

The critique was echoed by CPI(M) Kannur district secretary K.K. Ragesh, who also addressed the gathering in Mayyil. Ragesh strongly denounced the Taliparamba representative, referring to Govindan as the Brutus of Taliparamba and describing him as a class traitor.

The political dispute originates from internal disagreements over candidate selection prior to the recent elections. Govindan, a former CPI(M) district secretariat member, publicly rebelled after the party leadership nominated P.K. Shyamala, wife of CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan, to contest the Taliparamba seat.

Govindan was subsequently expelled from the CPI(M) for opposing the official party line. He later mounted a campaign in the 2026 Assembly elections as an independent candidate, securing victory in Taliparamba with the backing of the opposition United Democratic Front alliance.
