Taiwan approves $7.6bn drone budget amid rising China threat
Taiwan's parliament approves a $7.6bn drone budget to bolster defense against potential Chinese aggression, amid escalating regional tensions.

Taiwan's legislature has approved a $7.6 billion budget to accelerate domestic drone production amid growing concerns over potential military threats from China. The decision comes as Taipei seeks to enhance its defense capabilities through increased self-reliance in military technology.
The allocation, approved by opposition-led lawmakers from the Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), represents a significant shift in defense spending priorities. The KMT and TPP rejected President Lai Ching-te’s administration’s initial proposal of NT$210 billion ($6.6 billion) over five years, instead opting for a NT$240 billion ($7.6 billion) plan spread over six years. The KMT, which advocates for closer economic ties with Beijing, emphasized the need for domestically produced drones to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, particularly those from China.
Taiwan’s defense strategy has increasingly focused on asymmetric warfare capabilities, including unmanned aerial systems, in response to China’s military pressure. Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim highlighted the urgency of strengthening drone and counter-drone defenses to counter China’s "gray-zone" tactics—coercive actions short of direct warfare. "We must not allow the regime in Beijing to miscalculate Taiwan’s determination to defend itself," she stated.
The approved budget reflects broader efforts to localize defense production, particularly in drones, surveillance, and attack systems. Lawmaker Hsu Chiao-hsin of the KMT stressed the importance of supporting reputable manufacturers with secure supply chains to enhance cybersecurity and ensure stable industry growth. The government has already finalized its 2027 budget, while the 2026 annual budget faced prolonged delays before passage this month.
Taiwan remains dependent on U.S. military sales, including advanced fighter jets and missiles, to deter potential aggression from China. However, Washington has urged Taipei to increase its own defense spending, with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine serving as a case study in the effectiveness of smaller, more agile military systems like drones. President Lai’s administration has set a record NT$1.1 trillion ($34.8 billion) defense budget for 2027, exceeding 3 percent of the island’s GDP.
The push for greater self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing aligns with Taipei’s broader strategy to reduce vulnerabilities in its supply chains. By prioritizing domestic drone production, Taiwan aims to bolster its deterrence posture while navigating the complex geopolitical landscape in the Indo-Pacific region.
