Swiss Police Launch Manhunt After Rave Shooting: Terrorism Suspected

Swiss authorities have launched a large-scale manhunt after a shooting at a rave event near Zurich left one person dead and several injured, with authorities not ruling out terrorism as a possible motive. The incident occurred late Saturday night at the popular Club Hive venue in the municipality of Volketswil, located in the canton of Zurich. Police confirmed that the shooter fled the scene and remains at large as of early Sunday.

The Zurich cantonal police reported that the shooting took place around 11:30 PM local time during the "Neon Nights" rave, an event known for attracting hundreds of attendees. Emergency services arrived quickly, securing the area and providing medical assistance to those wounded. At least six people were hospitalized with injuries, while one individual, identified as a 24-year-old man from Zurich, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the injured or further details about their conditions.

Cantonal police spokesperson Karin Hofer stated that investigators are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry, including the possibility that the attack may have been politically or ideologically motivated. "We cannot exclude any hypothesis at this stage," Hofer told reporters during a press briefing on Sunday morning. She emphasized that forensic teams are actively processing the scene and collecting evidence, while surveillance footage from the venue and surrounding areas is being analyzed.

The federal prosecutor’s office in Switzerland has been briefed and has taken over the lead in the investigation, signaling the potential gravity of the case. The Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) is also reportedly assisting in the manhunt, which spans several cantons and has involved roadblocks and increased police presence at public events across the region.

Local residents near the club described a scene of panic and chaos following the shooting. "People were running everywhere, some screaming, others crying," said one witness who asked to remain anonymous. "It was like something out of a nightmare." The venue, which has a history of hosting electronic music events, has temporarily suspended all activities pending further notice.

Swiss federal authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police. In a joint statement, the Zurich cantonal police and the Federal Office of Police (fedpol) called for calm while acknowledging the seriousness of the situation.

As the investigation continues, questions remain about the shooter’s identity, possible accomplices, and the full extent of their intentions. Authorities have not yet made any arrests and are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
