Sheffield Artist Defends Ronnie O'Sullivan Mural Amid Mixed Reviews
Sheffield street artist Chris Ashmore defends his unfinished Ronnie O'Sullivan mural after residents call it "zombie-like" and "skeletal". The club plans touch‑ups.

A Sheffield street artist has defended his large-scale mural of seven-time world snooker champion Ronnie O'Sullivan following intense online criticism, clarifying that the viral artwork is still a work in progress.
Chris Ashmore was commissioned to paint the portrait on the exterior wall of the Spot On Snooker Club on Langsett Road in Sheffield. Images of the mural circulated widely on social media after the surrounding scaffolding was removed, drawing negative comparisons from critics who labeled the depiction "zombie-like," "skeletal," and resembling Michael Jackson.
In response to the backlash, Ashmore explained that he is only two weeks into what was allocated as a five-week project. He attributed the initial proportion issues to working on a tight scaffolding platform, which restricted his sightlines and prevented him from stepping back to view the piece in full perspective.
Ashmore noted that he typically uses a scissor lift to periodically check the proportions of his murals, but uneven ground at the site rendered that equipment unusable. He confirmed that he had always planned to hire a cherry picker for the final stages to perform the necessary touch-ups and skin tone refinements.
Dan Kirkland, manager of the Spot On Snooker Club, publicly backed the artist while acknowledging that the portrait requires minor adjustments. Kirkland noted that small changes around the facial features, particularly the eyes and mouth, would make a substantial difference to the overall likeness. He added that the venue will provide Ashmore with whatever equipment access he needs to finish the job.
Kirkland also condemned the severity of the online backlash, stating that while the public is entitled to voice opinions on the artwork, personal attacks directed at Ashmore cross a line.
Reaction among local Sheffield residents remains divided. Some locals expressed appreciation for the wall art, with resident Gillian Jones saying it brightened her day, and fan Glen Bridock describing the design as brilliant. However, other residents expressed disappointment. Shaun Spalding called the artwork shocking, adding that the eyes and teeth were incorrect and gave the portrait a skeletal appearance. Resident Frank Short agreed that while the general artwork was acceptable, the eyes did not look right.
Despite the scrutiny, Ashmore stated he remains focused on completing the commission properly rather than responding to online pressure. He emphasized that he will not rush the remaining work in three days just because of social media comments, preferring to take the necessary time to finish the mural to his standard.
