Satellite Imagery Shows Scale of Venezuela Earthquake Damage

At least 1,719 people are confirmed dead following two powerful earthquakes that struck northwestern Venezuela last week, with officials warning the toll could rise significantly as rescue efforts continue. The 7.3- and 6.3-magnitude quakes, which struck on June 24, have left thousands displaced and triggered growing criticism of the government’s response.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has indicated that fatalities may reach as high as 10,000, according to Sky News. Rescue teams, including international aid workers, are still searching for survivors amid aftershocks and concerns over structurally compromised buildings.
Satellite imagery provided to Bellingcat by Planet Labs PBC reveals the extent of destruction along a 14-mile stretch of Venezuela’s northern coast, from Catia La Mar to Caraballeda. High-resolution before-and-after images show collapsed apartment buildings, flattened structures, and widespread debris in key affected areas.
In Playa Grande, multiple buildings appear to have been reduced to rubble, with comparisons between pre-quake imagery (February 27, 2026) and post-quake scans (June 26, 2026) highlighting the devastation. Similar destruction is visible in Caraballeda, where buildings standing as of June 19, 2026, were severely damaged or leveled by June 27. Macuto, another hard-hit town, also shows significant structural collapse when comparing March 20, 2026, imagery to post-quake footage from June 27.
Social media has become a critical tool for tracking missing persons and documenting damage. Platforms are flooded with videos and images shared by locals and diaspora Venezuelans attempting to locate relatives or assess property damage. Drone footage from José María España Avenue in Caraballeda shows at least a dozen collapsed high-rises, while another video depicts a collapsed hotel in Macuto. Additional user-generated content from cities outside the satellite coverage area, including Caracas, Valencia, and Barquisimeto, further illustrates the quakes’ impact.
Engineers have raised alarms about buildings that remain standing, many of which may be structurally unsound. Reuters reports that housing officials are calling for a comprehensive safety audit to prevent further collapses.
International aid organizations are gradually arriving, but access to remote or heavily damaged regions remains limited. Rescue operations are further complicated by the risk of aftershocks.
Bellingcat, a non-profit investigative group specializing in open-source intelligence, has compiled and shared the satellite imagery to assist in damage assessment and humanitarian response efforts. The organization relies on public donations to fund its work, which includes documenting human rights abuses and conflict developments worldwide.
