Reading and Leeds Festival unveils major overhaul - can it shake its under-18 image?

Organizers of the Reading and Leeds Festival have launched the largest arena and staging overhaul in the event's history, introducing new stage concepts and age-restricted camping areas aimed at broadening the festival's demographic appeal.
The revamp by promoter Festival Republic includes redesigned performance spaces, an over-21 campsite, and a headline roster composed entirely of British and Irish acts for the first time in 25 years. Top billing across the dual sites includes Charli XCX, Dave, Raye, Fontaines DC, Chase & Status, and Florence + The Machine.
To address long-standing perceptions that the twin events cater predominantly to 16- to 18-year-olds, organizers introduced the new adult campsite and rebranded their dedicated quiet zone as The Oasis following strong demand. The physical layout of the festival has also been transformed. The main stage has been replaced by a new setup called The Grid, which features a large runway extending into the crowd, alongside new venue spaces including an immersive stage named The Gallery and a dance-focused area called The Warehouse.
Despite the structural updates, the overhaul has sparked debate among artists and attendees regarding opportunities for up-and-coming musicians. As part of the changes, organizers retired the BBC Introducing stage, which historically served as a key platform for unsigned and emerging talent.
The replacement platform, named The Canopy, has faced criticism after its initial lineup featured the children of several prominent figures in music and entertainment. Among those booked are Cruz Beckham, son of David and Victoria Beckham; Violet Grohl, daughter of Dave Grohl; Gene Gallagher, son of Liam Gallagher; and Moses Martin, son of Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Singer-songwriter Beth McCarthy, who is performing on the main stage after breaking through via the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury in previous years, criticized the removal of the dedicated platform. She stated that BBC Introducing was traditionally the primary entry point for independent artists who lack major industry backing or established fan bases.
In response to the criticism, a spokesperson for Festival Republic said the organization remains proud of its history with BBC Introducing, but maintained that The Canopy offers an opportunity to showcase a broader range of new artists. The spokesperson added that the festival has invested in larger stage structures, stronger production values, and an enhanced overall experience for both performers and audience members.
Attendees hold mixed views on the shifting identity of the festival. While some past attendees noted that the heavy teenage demographic previously deterred older fans from returning, younger music goers emphasized that the event provides an accessible rite of passage and a vital space for youth to discover new music.
