Police arrest seven more men in aftermath of deadly A66 crash

Police have arrested seven more men as part of an organized crime investigation following a head-on collision on the A66 that left seven people dead, including two police officers. Cleveland Police confirmed the latest operations bring the total number of arrests in the case to 24.
The latest arrests follow a series of incidents in the Middlesbrough and County Durham area. On Thursday night, officers stopped a vehicle on Kingsley Road in Grangetown and arrested four men, aged 21, 25, 35, and 40. The men were detained on suspicion of criminal damage with intent to endanger life after a vehicle was driven into a house on Steele Crescent. They are also being questioned over a caravan fire on Atlee Road and drug offences after Class A substances were seized.
Three additional men, aged 23, 30, and 42, were arrested on suspicion of offences including threats to kill and possession of criminal property. All three have since been released on conditional bail.
Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Fox said: "This latest disruptive activity now brings the total number of arrests to 24 since the investigation commenced. Several suspects arrested throughout the course of this week have been charged with serious offences and a number of offenders have been recalled to prison."
Among those charged is Kai Inico, who faces counts of possession with intent to supply a Class B drug. Four other individuals arrested earlier in the week have been released on bail.
The investigation was launched after an August 22 crash at South Bank, where a police vehicle collided with a Volkswagen Passat following a police pursuit. Inquests have been opened into the seven deaths. Teesside area coroner Paul Appleton reported that PC Matthew Blades, 37, died of head and neck injuries, and PC Tom Clough, 38, died of neck injuries.
The five occupants of the Passat who died in the crash were identified as Cole Worthy, 17, Theo Rae, 17, Makai Saddington, 18, Michael Robert Cahill, 23, and Jakub Matusiak, 23.
Hundreds of extra police officers have been deployed to support local operations. Matt Storey, the police and crime commissioner for Cleveland, thanked the community for its support following the tragic events. He stated that Officers Blades and Clough would be remembered as selfless, professional, and courageous police officers dedicated to serving their communities.
Detectives also clarified that a separate house fire in Grangetown, which killed 34-year-old Natalie McDonald and seven-year-old Valentina Foster, is not linked to the A66 crash. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the fire.
