Peace Board Envoy Warns Gaza Could Vanish Without Reconstruction and Withdrawal
Nikolay Mladenov, top envoy for the US‑led Board of Peace, warns Gaza could be effectively erased if Israel does not withdraw, demilitarise the area and rebuild.

The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolay Mladenov, has warned that the Gaza Strip risks becoming permanently uninhabitable unless urgent steps are taken toward reconstruction, Israeli withdrawal, and demilitarization.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Mladenov emphasized that deteriorating living conditions in Gaza could escalate into another security crisis, further destabilizing the region. His remarks come amid growing concerns over the humanitarian situation in the territory, which has been devastated by repeated conflicts and an ongoing blockade.
According to Mladenov, the lack of reconstruction efforts—combined with continued restrictions on movement and access—has left Gaza in a state of prolonged crisis. "Gaza could be gone for good if we don’t act now," he stated, underscoring the urgency of international intervention.
The UN envoy’s warning highlights the fragile state of Gaza, where nearly two million people face severe shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies. The territory has suffered extensive damage from successive rounds of violence, most recently during the escalation in May 2021, which left hundreds dead and thousands displaced.
Experts warn that without a significant shift in policy—including the lifting of the Israeli-Egyptian blockade and the resumption of Palestinian Authority governance—the situation could spiral further out of control. The blockade, in place since Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007, has severely restricted trade, travel, and economic development.
Mladenov’s comments also reflect broader concerns about the stalled peace process. While Israel has cited security threats from Hamas as justification for maintaining restrictions, critics argue that collective punishment has only deepened resentment and radicalization among Palestinians.
The UN has repeatedly called for a lifting of the blockade to allow for reconstruction and humanitarian aid. However, Israel maintains that any easing of restrictions must be tied to security guarantees, including the demilitarization of Hamas and other armed groups.
Egypt, which has mediated past ceasefires between Israel and Hamas, has also urged both sides to return to negotiations. But with political divisions among Palestinian factions and a lack of international consensus on how to address Gaza’s crisis, prospects for meaningful change remain slim.
For now, Mladenov’s warning serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of inaction. Without immediate intervention, Gaza’s collapse could have far-reaching consequences for regional stability, fueling further violence and displacement. The international community’s response—or lack thereof—will determine whether the territory can be saved from irreversible decline.
