One criminal arrested after gunfight with police in Patna; two officers injured

A gunfight erupted early Sunday between police and suspected extortionists along the Son River in Patna, resulting in injuries to two officers and the arrest of one suspect. The clash occurred during a targeted operation against individuals allegedly extorting local boatmen for protection money, Patna Police said.
One criminal, Aneesh Kumar, was injured by gunfire to the leg and hospitalized at Patna Medical College and Hospital. Sub-Inspector Raju Kumar Singh suffered a bullet wound to his arm, while Station House Officer Amit Kumar sustained a head injury. Police officials reported that approximately 40 rounds were fired by the suspects, with the police responding with about 22 rounds during the encounter.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikey Kumar Sharma confirmed that a special team had been deployed following intelligence about illegal mining and extortion activities targeting boat operators. “The police team signaled the suspects, who were traveling by boat to collect extortion money, to stop. Instead, they opened fire on the police,” Sharma stated.
Aneesh Kumar, who has a prior criminal record including a case from last year involving the recovery of an AK-47 linked to him, is now receiving medical treatment. Six other cases are registered against him. Piyush Kumar, another suspect connected to the boat, was arrested at the scene. Authorities also recovered illegal weapons, including three country-made pistols, one rifle, one country-made carbine, and 25 live cartridges.
Sharma emphasized that further investigation is underway to examine the suspects’ criminal histories and other details of the incident. “The police acted swiftly and effectively in confronting the criminals,” he said, reaffirming Patna Police’s ongoing commitment to combating crime, extortion, and illegal firearms.
