Nigel Farage Faces Questions Over Ties to Crypto Conspiracist John Mappin
Nigel Farage denies links to John Mappin, a Scientologist and crypto promoter involved in a suspected $6M scam linked to Awoke Coin.

Nigel Farage has denied any close association with John Mappin, a businessman and Reform UK supporter linked to a controversial cryptocurrency project that allegedly scammed investors. Farage’s office stated Mappin is not a “close friend” and has not been a Reform member for some time. The denial follows an investigation by openDemocracy and *The Times* into Mappin’s role in promoting Awoke Coin, a digital currency tied to conspiracy theories.
Mappin, 61, owns Cornwall’s Camelot Castle hotel, where he has hosted Farage multiple times. The two were briefly business partners in a Scientology-linked carbon offsetting firm, Dutch Green Business (DGB), which Farage later joined as chair before his position was suspended amid internal disputes. Mappin’s ties to far-right and pro-Russian figures have drawn scrutiny, including his past interactions with Russian officials like Kirill Dmitriev, a key figure in Kremlin negotiations over Ukraine.
Awoke Coin, promoted by Mappin as an “anti-woke” cryptocurrency, experienced a dramatic rise and fall in 2025. After reaching a $6 million market cap in August, its value plummeted to $25,000 by September, with investors alleging a “rug-pull” scam. Leaked Telegram messages showed Mappin joining investor groups shortly after the coin’s launch, where members discussed donating to Reform UK. Transactions linked to the coin were traced to wallets that obscured fund movements, raising concerns among investors.
Mappin denied any involvement in the project’s management or financial exploitation, calling his participation a “curiosity” about cryptocurrency trends. He claimed his departure from the Telegram group preceded the collapse, dismissing any connection as speculative. Farage’s spokesman reiterated that Mappin is not a political ally, though the businessman has publicly supported both Reform and the rival Restore Party.
Beyond cryptocurrency, Mappin’s pro-Russia stance has drawn attention. He gave interviews to Russian state media, met with expelled Russian military attaché Maxim Elovik, and exchanged messages with Dmitriev and ultranationalist Alexander Dugin. His past business dealings, including a stint at a discredited commodity firm and suspended California companies, further complicate his reputation. A 2002 conviction for defrauding a British heir into financing a fake film project underscores his history of controversies.
Farage’s association with Mappin reflects broader questions about the Reform leader’s controversial alliances amid ongoing scrutiny of his political network.
