Nepal-Tibet floods: death toll rises to 626 and number missing climbs to nearly 3,000 – latest updates

Nepal and Tibet are grappling with the aftermath of devastating floods that have claimed at least 626 lives and left nearly 3,000 people missing across both regions. The disaster, triggered by relentless monsoon rains and glacial lake outbursts, has overwhelmed local authorities and humanitarian organizations struggling to locate survivors and assess the full scope of the damage.
In Nepal’s Nuwakot district, families have gathered outside an army camp, poring over paper lists pinned to the walls in search of any mention of their relatives. Nepal’s authorities now report that 2,900 people are unaccounted for, while Chinese officials say over 550 individuals remain missing in Tibet. The floods have destroyed bridges, roads, and entire villages, cutting off remote communities and complicating rescue operations.
The crisis escalated following days of torrential rainfall that caused rivers to burst their banks and glacial lakes in the Himalayas to overflow. In Tibet, authorities have attributed the flooding to unusually heavy monsoon rains combined with rapid snowmelt from rising temperatures. Nepal’s officials cite similar factors, noting that saturated soil and overflowing rivers have exacerbated landslides and flash floods in hilly and mountainous areas.
Humanitarian agencies are warning of a growing public health crisis as contaminated water sources and damaged infrastructure raise the risk of waterborne diseases. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has called for urgent international assistance, emphasizing the need for clean water, medical supplies, and temporary shelter. The World Food Programme has also warned that disrupted supply chains could lead to food shortages in the coming weeks.
Search and rescue teams, including personnel from the Nepalese Army and Chinese emergency services, continue to operate in high-risk areas despite dangerous conditions. In some regions, helicopters are the only means of reaching stranded communities, but poor visibility and ongoing rainfall have grounded many flights. Government officials in both countries have pledged to increase coordination to facilitate cross-border rescue efforts where possible.
Health authorities in Nepal have reported a surge in waterborne illnesses, including cholera and dysentery, particularly in districts where clean water infrastructure has collapsed. In Tibet, authorities have begun distributing water purification tablets and conducting health screenings in affected towns. International aid organizations are mobilizing resources, but logistical challenges are slowing distribution.
The floods come after months of extreme weather events in South Asia, where scientists warn climate change is intensifying monsoon patterns and increasing the frequency of glacial lake outburst floods. Both Nepal and China have called for enhanced regional cooperation to address the growing threat posed by climate-induced disasters.
Reconstruction is expected to take months or years, with governments and aid groups focusing first on immediate relief before shifting to long-term recovery plans.
