Nepal flash floods LIVE: Death toll goes past 900; over 4,000 still missing

The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal has climbed past 900, as emergency teams continue to retrieve bodies from mud and debris across multiple districts. Officials from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported on Monday that 903 deaths have been confirmed, while 4,247 people remain missing following the catastrophic flooding event.

Search and rescue operations are concentrated in the most severely affected regions of the country. According to official figures released by the disaster management agency, Chitwan district has suffered the heaviest loss of life, with 272 bodies recovered. In neighboring areas, authorities have retrieved 207 bodies in Nawalparasi East, 151 in Nawalparasi West, and 62 in Gorkha district.

Fatalities have also been reported across several other central and northern districts. Disaster management data indicates that rescue workers have recovered 95 bodies in Nuwakot, 55 in Dhading, 37 in Tanahu, and 24 in Rasuwa. The total number of missing persons includes 99 security personnel who were deployed during initial response efforts, as well as 591 foreign nationals, complicating international tracing efforts.

The disaster has caused widespread disruption to energy infrastructure across affected river basins. Authorities confirmed that at least 933 workers are currently trapped at around six hydropower project sites affected by the floodwaters. Damaged bridges, washed-out roads, and severed communication lines have created immense logistical hurdles for rescue teams attempting to reach these isolated facilities.

Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah described the situation as an unimaginable and heartbreaking disaster. The prime minister stated that state authorities are working around the clock, though they continue to face severe challenges in evaluating the full scope of the destruction across remote Himalayan terrain.

The crisis began on August 19, when an enormous wave of ice, rocks, and mud cascaded down mountain valleys, destroying villages, homes, and public infrastructure. The extreme event also impacted the neighboring Tibet region in China, where cross-border flooding claimed additional lives and caused extensive property damage across high-altitude settlements.

Relief operations are currently underway, with priority given to providing emergency shelter, food, medical aid, and clean drinking water to displaced communities. Military units, law enforcement personnel, and local volunteers remain deployed across affected zones to assist in ongoing recovery efforts. Authorities warn that secondary landslides and flood risks remain elevated as emergency personnel work to clear blocked transport corridors.
