French Journalist Christophe Gleizes Remains Imprisoned in Algeria as Colleagues Call for Release
PARIS, July 12, 2025 — Christophe Gleizes, a journalist employed by the French publications Society and So Foot, has been held in detention in Algeria since June 29, 2025, according to colleagues and professional associations monitoring his case. No official Algerian government statement has been released detailing the circumstances of his detention, including charges or legal status.
Gleizes’ arrest occurred amid heightened scrutiny of foreign journalists operating in Algeria, though specific reasons for his detention remain unclear. Colleagues in France have raised concerns over the lack of transparency from Algerian authorities regarding his case. His employers and professional networks have not received formal communication from Algerian judicial or administrative bodies since his detention began.
In response, a coalition of French media organizations, press freedom groups, and human rights advocates issued a public call on Friday for Gleizes’ immediate release. The statement emphasized the need for Algerian authorities to clarify the legal grounds for his detention and ensure his right to a fair and transparent judicial process.
“Journalists must be able to work without fear of arbitrary detention,” said a spokesperson for Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in a press release. “The absence of information about Christophe Gleizes’ situation is deeply concerning and raises serious questions about press freedom in Algeria.”
The Algerian government has previously restricted press access and expelled foreign journalists, particularly those reporting on sensitive political or social issues. Algeria currently ranks 145th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2025 World Press Freedom Index.
Gleizes’ family has not publicly commented on the case, and requests for information from Algerian authorities via diplomatic channels remain unanswered. His employers have called on the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene at the highest levels to secure his release.
The detention follows a pattern of increased pressure on independent media in Algeria, where several journalists have faced arrest, trial, or forced exile in recent years. While the Algerian constitution guarantees freedom of the press, critics argue that laws on national security and defamation are frequently used to silence critical reporting.
As of this report, no trial date has been set for Gleizes, and French officials have not confirmed whether consular access has been granted. The case continues to draw international attention, with press freedom organizations urging Algeria to uphold its obligations under international law.
French authorities have declined to provide further details, citing ongoing diplomatic efforts. The situation remains fluid, and updates are expected as negotiations progress through official and unofficial channels.
