Mehmet Oz Dismisses Measles Concerns After Pennsylvania Baby’s Death
Mehmet Oz downplays measles concerns after a newborn’s death in Pennsylvania, amid a surge of unvaccinated cases and calls for vaccine confidence.

Pennsylvania health officials have confirmed the nation's first two measles-related deaths of the year, including a newborn baby in Lancaster County, amidst a surging national outbreak. Following the announcement, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz drew scrutiny after publicly dismissing public health concerns over the disease, while Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. questioned the validity of the state health reports.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported that both individuals who died were unvaccinated. Responding to the fatalities during a television appearance, Oz urged the public not to be concerned inappropriately about the rising case counts. He suggested that the victims might have suffered from underlying conditions that were already attacking them, drawing a comparison to how secondary infections were categorized during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Medical experts quickly challenged the federal official's assessment. Lancaster County Coroner Stephen Diamantoni noted that the deceased infant suffered a lacerated spleen. Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatrician and vaccine safety expert at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, explained that measles infections can cause significant spleen enlargement, which can subsequently rupture during childbirth. Offit noted that state health data indicated the patients would not have died were it not for measles, criticizing attempts to attribute the fatalities to other causes.
The situation also sparked political debate after Kennedy claimed without evidence that the reported deaths were fabricated or announced for political reasons by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's administration. Pennsylvania Health Secretary Debra Bogen refuted the claim, stating that state health authorities conducted thorough investigations to verify the measles infections before releasing the information to the public.
Measles cases in the United States have surpassed 2,700 this year, reaching the highest levels recorded in decades. The disease was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000 following the widespread success of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine program. Current health data shows that 93 percent of recent cases involve individuals who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown, with young children experiencing the highest rate of infection and significant hospitalization rates.
The outbreak comes amidst shifting federal health policy recommendations. President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order recommending that the standard combined MMR vaccine be divided into three separate injections. Public health experts warn that splitting the vaccine could disrupt immunization schedules, reduce overall uptake, and further exacerbate the spread of the preventable virus across the country.
