Liverpool agree £123m deal for PSG's Barcola

Liverpool Football Club has reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain to sign forward Bradley Barcola in a deal worth up to £123 million. The France international, 23, is set to undergo a medical examination this weekend before finalizing a long-term contract at Anfield. The transfer follows months of negotiations, with PSG initially valuing the player at £145 million, though Liverpool secured the deal with an initial fee of £106 million plus £17 million in potential add-ons.

Barcola, a left-footed winger, has become a key target for Liverpool as they seek to strengthen their attacking options following the departures of Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah in recent transfer windows. Since joining PSG from Lyon in 2023 for £38.5 million, he has won multiple domestic and European titles, including three Ligue 1 championships, two UEFA Champions League trophies, and the FIFA Club World Cup. His versatility—capable of playing on either flank or centrally—adds further value to his potential move to Liverpool.

The prospective arrival of Barcola has intensified speculation over the future of Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, with reports suggesting interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola acknowledged Gakpo’s strong performances but declined to guarantee his long-term future at the club. "He has been very good since he came back from the World Cup and his holiday, with a very good attitude," Iraola said ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Nottingham Forest. "I hope we can keep him at that level because I think he has been very influential in our games."

Liverpool’s pursuit of a right winger has also been evident, with interest in Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh and Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr earlier in the transfer window. Barcola’s potential arrival could provide competition for established attackers and cover for Alexander Isak while Hugo Ekitike recovers from an Achilles injury. If completed, the deal would represent a record fee for a player departing France’s Ligue 1.

For PSG, the transfer would recoup more than triple their initial investment in Barcola, as he nears the final two years of his contract with no indication of extending his stay. Despite adding wingers Maghnes Akliouche and Mika Godts this summer, Barcola often found himself behind younger talents like Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in big matches last season.

Liverpool’s ability to negotiate a lower initial fee than PSG’s valuation underscores their strategic approach in the transfer market. The club remains focused on rebuilding its squad while maintaining competitiveness in both domestic and European competitions.
