Lincoln Project Issues Call to Combat Trumpism Amid China Praise for Trump
The Lincoln Project urges nationwide action against Trumpism after China publicly thanked President Trump, stressing the need to defend U.S. democracy.

WASHINGTON — A new statement from the Chinese government has drawn attention for its unexpected praise of former U.S. President Donald Trump, a figure widely criticized by Western governments and human rights organizations.
In a brief but pointed message released on Tuesday, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude toward Trump for his administration’s policies, which it described as beneficial to Beijing’s strategic interests. The statement did not elaborate on specific actions or decisions cited in the acknowledgment.
The comment comes as relations between the United States and China remain tense over issues including trade, technology, human rights, and military posturing in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Lincoln Project, a U.S.-based political action organization known for its opposition to Trump and his political movement, responded to the Chinese statement with a strongly worded message of its own.
“A message from the People’s Republic of China: Thank you, President Trump,” the organization wrote in a social media post. “The Lincoln Project is a leading pro-democracy organization in the United States — dedicated to the preservation, protection, and defense of democracy. Our fight against Trumpism is only beginning. We must combat these forces everywhere and at all times — our democracy depends on it.”
The Lincoln Project did not respond to requests for further clarification on the nature of the Chinese statement or its potential implications.
Foreign policy analysts suggest that China’s acknowledgment of Trump’s policies may reflect a strategic calculus rather than genuine approval of Trump as a leader. Trump’s presidency was marked by a confrontational approach to China, including tariffs, sanctions, and rhetorical attacks on Beijing’s human rights record.
However, some of his policies—such as withdrawal from international agreements and a focus on national sovereignty—aligned with Beijing’s emphasis on non-interference and state-led development models.
“China tends to respond pragmatically to U.S. administrations based on perceived interests,” said Dr. Elena Chen, a China specialist at the Council on Foreign Relations. “Even if relations are adversarial overall, there may be areas where policies overlap or where one side sees an opportunity.”
The Lincoln Project’s response underscores its ongoing opposition to Trump’s political legacy and the movement that continues to support him. The group, founded in 2019 by former Republicans opposed to Trump, has been active in opposing his influence in American politics through advocacy, advertising, and public campaigns.
Trump remains a dominant figure in the Republican Party and is widely expected to be a leading candidate in the 2024 presidential election. His supporters have continued to challenge the results of the 2020 election and push for restrictive voting laws in several states.
While the Chinese government’s statement is likely symbolic rather than substantive, it has fueled debate about the complex and often contradictory nature of U.S.-China relations. Analysts caution against overinterpreting Beijing’s words but note that diplomatic rhetoric can sometimes reveal underlying strategic considerations.
As of Wednesday, neither the White House nor the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued further statements regarding the exchange.
