Kanpur Woman Shot Dead at Home; Police Link to Sister's Estranged Husband
28‑year‑old Chandni was shot dead inside her Kanpur home; police suspect a link to sister Sarojini’s estranged husband Santosh. Investigation underway continues.
A 28-year-old woman was shot dead inside her home in the Cantonment area of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday night, in what police suspect is a fallout from an escalating family dispute. The victim, identified as Chandni, was shot in the abdomen allegedly in front of her three-year-old daughter and younger sister.
The fatal attack occurred at a residence near Shakti Chauraha. According to family members, Chandni was having dinner with her younger sister, Anjali, when two men arrived on a motorcycle and entered the premises. The men reportedly demanded information regarding the location of another sister, named Sarojini.
When Chandni confronted the intruders and objected to their questioning, one of the men verbally abused her before drawing a firearm. The assailant shot Chandni in the abdomen, after which both suspects quickly escaped on their motorcycle.
Family members and responding officers rushed the injured woman to KPM Hospital in Kanpur. However, medical staff at the facility pronounced her dead on arrival.
Kanpur Police quickly cordoned off the crime scene, and a forensic unit was deployed to collect evidence. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Satyajit Gupta stated that four dedicated police teams have been established to trace the suspects and bring them into custody.
Investigators suspect the murder is directly linked to an ongoing marital dispute between Sarojini and her estranged husband, Santosh, who resides in Kallupurwa in the nearby Unnao district. The couple has been living separately for approximately two years, and a related court case has been pending since 2024.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that an argument had broken out earlier on Sunday evening around 5 p.m. when Santosh visited his in-laws' home. During that confrontation, Sarojini reportedly slapped him. Police believe the late-night shooting may have been carried out in retaliation for the earlier confrontation.
Authorities have detained three individuals for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. Raids are currently being conducted across Kanpur and Unnao to locate the remaining suspects. Police confirmed that formal legal proceedings have commenced based on the official complaint submitted by the victim's family, and further investigation is underway to verify the exact roles of all suspects involved.
