Apple dominated the global smartphone market in the second quarter of 2026, with its iPhone 17 series occupying the top five positions in the world’s 10 best‑selling smartphones, according to a new report released by Counterpoint Research on Tuesday. The iPhone 17 was the single best‑selling model, capturing 6 % of worldwide unit sales. Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro came in second and third, while the entry‑level iPhone 17 e ranked seventh and the previous‑generation iPhone 16 slipped to tenth place. Samsung was the only other manufacturer to appear in the top 10, with the Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G in fourth, the Galaxy A07 4G in fifth, the Galaxy A17 5G in sixth, the Galaxy A17 4G in eighth and the Galaxy S26 5G in ninth.
The top‑10 list accounted for 26 % of all smartphone shipments worldwide, an increase of 2 % compared with the same period a year earlier. That growth came despite a broader decline in the global market, as Counterpoint’s analysis noted that Apple’s unit sales rose 5 % year‑over‑year. The company’s sales gains were driven largely by strong demand in India, Japan and the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, and a near‑doubling of sales in South Korea during the quarter. The growth was attributed to the popularity of the new iPhone 17 line, which offered significant upgrades that narrowed the performance gap between the base model and the Pro variants.
Apple’s premium segment also benefited from a mix of trade‑in programs, promotional offers and financing options that improved affordability for consumers. The company’s strategy to push higher‑priced models appeared effective, as rising smartphone prices across the market shifted consumers toward the premium segment, giving Apple a competitive edge. The firm’s strong performance was seen as a counterpoint to the broader market downturn, where many competitors increased prices amid ongoing component shortages.
Senior analyst Karn Chauhan of Counterpoint Research said that the iPhone 17’s success was “driven by a combination of product improvements, price positioning and marketing initiatives.” He added that the base iPhone 17 model’s upgrades helped it compete more closely with the Pro models, while the Pro and Pro Max models continued to appeal to consumers willing to pay a premium. The analyst noted that Apple’s trade‑in and financing options helped sustain demand even as overall smartphone prices rose.
Samsung’s performance in the top‑10 list reflected a focus on its flagship and mid‑range devices. The Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G, Samsung’s flagship, secured the fourth spot, while the Galaxy A07 4G and Galaxy A17 5G occupied fifth and sixth positions, respectively. The Galaxy A17 4G and Galaxy S26 5G followed in eighth and ninth places. Samsung’s mix of high‑end and budget models helped it remain competitive in key markets, but it fell short of the market share captured by Apple’s iPhone 17 series.
