How Buryat Designer Oksana Alkhunsaeva Revived Culture Through Fashion
Buryat fashion designer Oksana Alkhunsaeva merges tradition with modern style, reviving cultural pride through handcrafted costumes across Russia.

Oksana Alkhunsaeva, a Buryat fashion designer based in Russia, has transformed her personal struggles and cultural heritage into a thriving career, earning national recognition for her modern interpretations of traditional Buryat clothing.
Born in 1984 in Ust-Ordynsky, a settlement in Russia’s Irkutsk region, Alkhunsaeva grew up in a Buryat family that maintained cultural traditions despite widespread Russification in the Soviet era. The Buryats, a Mongolic people indigenous to the Lake Baikal region, faced centuries of colonization, displacement, and cultural suppression under both the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. Today, most Buryats remain within the Russian Federation, though the Republic of Buryatia has experienced disproportionately high military casualties since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Alkhunsaeva’s journey to fashion design began in childhood. Fascinated by sewing and clothing from an early age, she dreamed of becoming a designer after watching the TV series *Simply Maria*, which follows a rural girl’s rise to fashion stardom in Mexico City. Her teenage years, however, were marked by bullying at school, where she faced mockery for her appearance and surname. These experiences led her to study psychology at university, seeking to understand human behavior.
A turning point came in 2008 when she joined the Center for the Preservation and Development of the Buryat Ethnic Group. While working at the center’s Altargana festival—a major international event celebrating Buryat culture—she was struck by the richness of traditional Buryat clothing, which she had rarely seen in daily life. The festival’s namesake, the altargana plant, symbolizes deep roots despite its humble appearance, a metaphor Alkhunsaeva would later apply to her own work.
Balancing motherhood and a demanding career, she began sewing costumes for family members, gradually refining her craft. Though her early designs were strictly traditional, she soon realized they lacked practical application. Seeking broader recognition, she entered fashion shows, where a journalist’s interview request mirrored the scene from *Simply Maria* she had once imagined. While she enjoyed the experience, her true ambition was for people to wear her clothing in everyday life.
Alkhunsaeva’s approach to design prioritizes individuality. She first assesses a client’s preferences in modern clothing before translating those styles into Buryat costume, blending tradition with contemporary aesthetics. Her work gained official acknowledgment in 2023 when she was named best designer in the Ust-Orda Buryat district.
Her family plays a crucial role in her success. Her husband manages logistics, her mother assists with sewing and fashion shows, and her father crafts traditional knives while providing transportation. Together, they form a tight-knit team supporting her vision.
Despite occasional doubts about leaving the fashion world for a stable office job, Alkhunsaeva remains committed to her craft. She describes feeling guided by a persistent inner voice—one that echoes her grandmother’s dreamlike instruction: “Sew.” Her designs, now sought after across Russia from Moscow to Kamchatka, stand as both a personal triumph and a testament to the enduring power of cultural identity.
