How a 12-Year-Old’s Courage Exposed Years of Sexual Abuse by Adoptive Father
A 12-year-old survivor's unflinching testimony led to the arrest of her adoptive father after years of sexual abuse. The investigation revealed systemic failures in protecting children.

Polk County, Fla. — In the summer of 2016, a 12-year-old girl in the outskirts of Tampa sat on a couch, nervously picking at her nails as Polk County Sheriff’s Detective Melissa Turnage posed a series of questions. Taylor Cadle, who had been adopted by her great uncle and his wife three years earlier, spoke in a barely audible whisper about years of alleged sexual abuse by her adoptive father, Henry Cadle. The abuse, she said, began when she was 9 and had escalated to repeated assaults, including on the night before the interview.
According to a recorded interview with Turnage, Taylor described incidents where Henry Cadle would assault her during errands, often in secluded areas near swamps. She said the abuse occurred three times a week, including during drives to buy milk. The detective responded with skepticism, suggesting Taylor might have fabricated the allegations. “Basically, Taylor, I guess, has made up these allegations, okay?” Turnage said in an interview with Henry Cadle later that day. Henry denied the accusations, calling them baseless and stating, “Only thing I’ve ever did with that kid is loved her.”
Turnage also interviewed Henry’s wife, Lisa Cadle, who dismissed the allegations, suggesting Taylor was prone to making false claims when upset. Turnage echoed this sentiment, telling Lisa that children sometimes make unfounded accusations when they are unhappy. However, during a follow-up interview with Taylor later that afternoon, Turnage shifted her approach, focusing on inconsistencies in Taylor’s statements. She warned Taylor of the potential consequences of her allegations, including being removed from her home and placed back into foster care.
Taylor, who had initially hoped the somber hospital visit would keep her safe, realized she had miscalculated the detective’s response. Faced with the threat of losing her family and home, Taylor recounted the abuse once more. “Everything I told you earlier is not a lie,” she said in a strained voice. Turnage then arranged for Taylor to undergo a forensic medical examination at a regional hospital.
That night, Taylor underwent a sexual assault examination, which included invasive procedures she later described as shocking and traumatic. Now 21, Taylor has since rebuilt her life but still bears the emotional scars of the abuse. The case highlights the challenges faced by child abuse victims, particularly when authorities initially respond with skepticism. It also underscores the importance of thorough investigations and the need for professionals to approach such cases with sensitivity and an open mind.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has not publicly commented on the specifics of this case. However, Sheriff Grady Judd, known for his tough stance on crime and his extensive social media presence, has repeatedly emphasized the protection of children as a core mission of his agency. Despite this, the initial response to Taylor’s allegations raises questions about the handling of such sensitive cases.
