House GOPer in Private Meeting: Trump’s Exhausting Our Voters

House Republican Staffer Warns of Voter Fatigue Impacting Midterm Races
WASHINGTON — A Republican member of Congress from a deeply conservative district has privately expressed concerns that President Donald Trump’s polarizing influence and erratic policy decisions may be depressing voter enthusiasm among GOP supporters, potentially jeopardizing the party’s hold on competitive House seats.
Rep. Stephanie Bice (R-Okla.), representing Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District—a district Trump carried by nearly 15 points in 2020—acknowledged in a private discussion that Trump’s unpopularity could drive disaffected Republican voters toward Democratic candidates or even keep them from casting ballots altogether.
“The challenge that we have is that we have to get over the narrative that ‘I don’t like this guy, so I’m going to vote for the Democrat,’” Bice told a group of Republican students at Oklahoma State University on Thursday, according to audio obtained by The Bulwark, a political news outlet. “Because I’m telling you right now, I’m hearing it already.”
She outlined two potential outcomes of voter disillusionment: either Republicans cast protest votes for Democrats while still supporting GOP candidates down-ballot, or, in her words, “people don’t go vote”—a scenario that would disproportionately harm Republicans in tight contests.
Bice’s remarks provide a rare candid insight into the internal anxieties among some House Republicans as they prepare for this year’s midterm elections. In the conversation, she recounted a recent exchange with a GOP executive who described Trump as “exhausting,” a sentiment Bice indicated was increasingly common within the party’s base.
The comments underscore growing unease among establishment Republicans about Trump’s continued dominance over the party, particularly as he faces multiple legal challenges and a rising number of indictments. While Trump remains a powerful force in GOP primaries, his broader electoral appeal—especially among independents and suburban voters—has declined since the 2020 election.
Public polling has consistently shown Trump’s approval ratings hovering below 40%, and his presence on the ballot has been linked to underperformance for down-ballot Republicans in recent special elections. However, direct criticism of Trump from sitting members of Congress remains rare due to his enduring influence over the party’s base and fundraising networks.
Bice, who was first elected in 2020 and won reelection in 2022 by a narrow margin, has generally aligned herself with the Trump wing of the party on key votes, including opposing impeachment inquiries and supporting hardline immigration policies. Despite this, her private remarks suggest a recognition that the president’s polarizing persona may be wearing thin on the very voters the GOP needs to retain control of the House.
The midterm elections, set for November 5, will determine whether Republicans maintain their slim majority in the House or face a shift in power to Democrats. While national forecasts currently favor Republicans due to historical trends and voter dissatisfaction with President Biden’s performance, intraparty divisions and candidate quality remain significant variables.
Bice’s office did not respond to requests for further comment.
