Hong Kong police officer arrested after allegedly sending indecent messages, images to female friend of suspect

Hong Kong police officer arrested for alleged misconduct in public office
HONG KONG – A 32-year-old Hong Kong police officer has been arrested and charged with one count of misconduct in public office after allegedly sending indecent messages and explicit photos to a female friend of a suspect he was investigating.
Police confirmed the arrest in a statement released Thursday, saying the officer was taken into custody last week in Tuen Mun. Investigators allege that in May 2025, the officer contacted the woman—who is a friend of a suspect in a separate criminal case—and sent her inappropriate messages and images.
The officer, who has been identified as a member of the Kwai Tsing police district, appeared in Shatin Magistrates’ Courts on Friday morning and has been suspended from duty pending trial. According to police records, the woman filed a formal complaint on May 12, 2025.
Misconduct in public office is a serious offense under Hong Kong law, carrying a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment and an unspecified fine. The Hong Kong Police Force emphasized in its statement that it holds officers to high standards of conduct and will not tolerate illegal behavior.
This case follows a recent high-profile conviction involving a former police chief inspector, who was sentenced to 30 months in prison in May for misconduct in public office. The former officer had pleaded guilty to accepting HK$1.4 million in bribes in exchange for leaking case details and discontinuing an investigation.
Police did not provide further details about the nature of the suspect’s original case or the relationship between the officer and the woman involved. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be considered depending on findings.
The arrest comes amid heightened scrutiny of police conduct in Hong Kong, particularly following the implementation of the National Security Law in 2020 and ongoing debates over law enforcement accountability.
The Hong Kong Police Force has reiterated its commitment to maintaining public trust and integrity within its ranks. As of this report, no further statements have been issued regarding the officer’s identity or the specifics of the alleged misconduct.
This is a developing story. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
