Green sea turtle hatchlings head to Mediterranean in Türkiye

Green sea turtle hatchlings have begun their journey from nests in southern Türkiye to the Mediterranean Sea, marking another season of conservation efforts along the coast of Mersin province. Since May, hatchlings have emerged from nests at Davultepe 100th Year Nature Park in the Mezitli district, following their natural incubation period. The process is being closely monitored by researchers from Mersin University's Sea Turtle Research and Application Center, led by lecturer Mahmut Ergene, alongside university students.
As of this season, approximately 80 percent of the hatchlings from eggs laid in May and June have successfully made their way to the sea. Ergene reported that while the current hatchling count at Davultepe beach shows a decline compared to previous years, such fluctuations are considered normal within the natural reproductive cycle of sea turtles, which typically experience variability every two to three years. He expressed optimism that nest numbers will rise in the coming seasons.
The Sea Turtle Research and Application Center at Mersin University plays a key role in monitoring and protecting these endangered reptiles. The center carries out conservation projects, scientific research, and public awareness campaigns across Mersin, helping to increase local understanding and support for sea turtle conservation.
Ergene emphasized the importance of human sensitivity in turtle nesting areas. He cautioned against disturbing nests or attempting to assist hatchlings by carrying them to the sea, as such actions can disrupt their natural behavior and reduce survival chances. Instead, he encouraged well-meaning individuals to support hatchlings by removing plastic waste and solid debris from their paths, ensuring safe passage to the water.
Mersin has long been recognized as a critical habitat for green sea turtles in the Mediterranean, with nesting sites along its sandy shores. The university’s ongoing efforts aim not only to protect current populations but also to foster long-term conservation through education and community involvement.
By focusing on responsible behavior and environmental stewardship, conservationists hope to secure a safer future for green sea turtles in the region.
