French Independent Bookstores Face Pressure from Far-Right Movements This Fall
Independent bookstores in France are struggling as far-right groups challenge their offerings, sparking concerns over censorship and free expression during the fall season.

French independent bookstores open fall season amid pressure from far-right groups
PARIS – Independent bookstores across France are confronting heightened political pressure as they begin the fall season, with far-right activists increasingly targeting establishments they accuse of promoting “woke” or “anti-French” literature.
The far-right National Rally (RN) party has intensified its scrutiny of independent bookshops in recent months, claiming some stores stock titles that challenge traditional conservative values. RN officials have called for public boycotts and local council reviews of funding for stores deemed ideologically misaligned.
“These are not isolated incidents,” said Sophie Laurent, spokesperson for the National Federation of Independent Bookstores (FNIL). “We’ve seen coordinated campaigns in several regions, including social media harassment of booksellers and demands for the removal of certain titles from shelves.”
In Hénin-Beaumont, a northern town with a strong RN presence, a local councilor recently proposed halting municipal subsidies to a bookstore that hosted a reading by an author known for progressive social commentary. The motion was narrowly defeated, but not before sparking public debate.
Similar tensions have emerged in Lyon, where a far-right group distributed flyers outside an independent bookstore last month, labeling it a “den of cultural Marxism.” The store reported no physical damage but noted a drop in foot traffic following the incident.
Bookstore owners report growing unease, especially when events feature authors from marginalized communities or address topics like racism, gender identity, or colonial history. Some have installed security cameras or hired private security for public events.
“We’re not about to stop hosting these discussions,” said Thomas Moreau, owner of Librairie L’Échappée in Toulouse. “But we do have to take precautions. The climate has changed.”
According to data from the FNIL, nearly 40% of independent bookstores have faced some form of pressure in the last 18 months—whether online harassment, boycott calls, or political interference. While most incidents have not escalated to violence, the psychological toll on booksellers has been significant.
The national government has yet to issue a formal response, though the Ministry of Culture acknowledged “growing concerns” about freedom of expression in cultural spaces.
“Public debate is essential to democracy,” said Culture Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra in a statement. “But intimidation has no place in our society.”
Critics argue the far-right campaign reflects a broader strategy to control cultural narratives by targeting spaces of intellectual diversity.
“Bookstores are not neutral, but they must remain open to all ideas,” said historian Pascal Ory. “When political actors try to dictate what can be read or discussed, we risk eroding the foundations of free thought.”
As the fall season begins, independent booksellers face a difficult balancing act: defending their role as guardians of free expression while navigating an increasingly polarized political landscape.
