Four detained for PKK propaganda in southeastern Türkiye

Authorities in southeastern Türkiye detained four suspects on Sunday for allegedly hanging posters of PKK terrorists on walls in Diyarbakır, a province with a large Kurdish population. The Diyarbakır Governor’s Office described the incident as isolated, occurring in only a few small streets, and said security forces had taken swift action.

Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi emphasized the government’s commitment to the ongoing “terror-free Türkiye” initiative, which aims for the full disarmament of the PKK and the reintegration of its members. Çiftçi warned on social media that authorities would not tolerate provocations aimed at undermining national unity. “Every provocateur attempting to poison the climate of national unity and brotherhood will be subject to the treatment he or she deserves,” he stated.

The PKK has intensified its propaganda efforts following the introduction of a new law that defers prosecution for PKK members not involved in violent acts. Supporters of the initiative, including President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, argue that it will foster unity between Turks and Kurds. Critics, however, have condemned related remembrance events held by a PKK-aligned party, which they say threaten social cohesion.

Çiftçi outlined the government’s broader strategy to eliminate terrorism and violence, strengthen social cohesion, and focus on development and prosperity. “The terror-free Türkiye process is an opportunity to open a new chapter that will free our country from the shackles holding it back,” he wrote. He also stressed the importance of coordination among state institutions and urged all sectors of society—political parties, civil society, and citizens—to contribute to maintaining stability during this sensitive period.

Diyarbakır, a key city in Türkiye’s predominantly Kurdish southeast, has historically been a focal point for PKK activity and propaganda. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further disruptions.
