Four Arrested in Connection with Boxer Zolani Tete's Murder in South Africa

South African law enforcement officers have arrested four men in connection with the murder of former world boxing champion Zolani Tete, who was gunned down in an ambush outside his home in the Eastern Cape on Friday.

A 22-year-old suspect arrested on Saturday is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Monday to face charges of murder and attempted murder. The three remaining suspects were taken into custody on Sunday and are set to appear in court on Tuesday. Two of those suspects face charges regarding the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, while prosecutors determine whether additional murder charges will be filed.

The 38-year-old South African boxer was sitting in his vehicle waiting for his gate to open in Mdantsane when two masked gunmen in balaclavas exited another car and opened fire. Tete was killed in the attack, while a 27-year-old female passenger in his car sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Law enforcement authorities confirmed that the motive behind the targeted shooting remains unclear.

Tributes to the fallen athlete have been widespread across South Africa. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie paid tribute to the former champion, stating that South Africa has lost one of the finest fighters it has ever produced. Former Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula also commended Tete, lamenting the loss of a great South African who has made an immense contribution in the sport of boxing.

Tete established himself as a top-tier international fighter during his career, winning the IBF super-flyweight world title in 2014 and holding the WBO bantamweight title from 2017 to 2019. In November 2017, Tete earned a Guinness World Record for the fastest knockout in world title fight history, defeating Siboniso Gonya in just 11 seconds. He competed frequently abroad, fighting eight times in the United Kingdom, including a high-profile victory against Liverpool boxer Paul Butler in 2015.

At the time of his death, Tete was working toward reviving his professional career. His manager, Mla Tengimfene, confirmed that Tete was actively training for a comeback fight after completing an anti-doping suspension that lapsed in July. The four-year ban was issued by the UK Anti-Doping Agency after Tete tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol following a July 2022 victory over British fighter Jason Cunningham, a result later changed to a no-contest. Tete concluded his professional career with 29 wins, four losses, and one no-contest.

The fatal attack highlights ongoing concerns over violent crime in South Africa, which maintains one of the highest homicide rates in the world. Recent official statistics show that an average of 58 people were killed each day in the country between January and March of this year.
