Four advantages iPhone 18 Pro will have over the iPhone Ultra

Apple is set to announce its next flagship smartphones, the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Ultra, in a launch expected later this year. While the Ultra will carry a higher price tag, analysts note that the Pro model will retain several advantages over the more expensive variant.
One key differentiation is the camera system. The iPhone 18 Pro is rumored to receive a variable‑aperture main camera, a feature that would allow the lens to adjust its aperture size for different lighting conditions. This upgrade could enhance portrait photography and improve low‑light performance. The Ultra, which is expected to have a slimmer profile, would likely be unable to accommodate the larger components required for a variable‑aperture sensor. As a result, the Pro line would maintain a camera advantage that the Ultra would not match.
Battery life is another area where the Pro models are projected to lead. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is reported to include a battery that is 10 % larger than the battery in the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Combined with efficiency gains from the new A20 Pro and C2 chips, experts anticipate that the Pro Max will offer the longest battery life ever seen on an iPhone. The Ultra’s foldable design and smaller battery are expected to limit its endurance, making it unlikely to rival the Pro Max’s longevity.
Security and authentication also favor the Pro line. Apple has reportedly decided to exclude Face ID from the Ultra, leaving it with Touch ID only. The Ultra’s thin chassis would not provide sufficient space for the dual set of Face ID components—one for the outer display and another for the inner display—required to support facial recognition. In contrast, the iPhone 18 Pro will continue to use the Face ID system that has been a staple of the brand for nearly a decade, giving it an edge in convenience and speed for unlocking the device.
Camera hardware differences extend to zoom capabilities. The Pro and Pro Max models will retain a telephoto lens, which the Ultra will not feature. The Ultra will include a main and ultra‑wide lens but will lack an optical zoom option. For users who rely on the telephoto camera for better image quality and versatility, the Pro’s inclusion of this lens—especially with rumors of an even larger aperture—makes it the clear choice.
Beyond hardware, the overall user experience is expected to differ. The Ultra will introduce a new foldable form factor with separate inner and outer displays, a departure from the single‑display design that has defined iPhones for years. While the foldable concept offers novelty and potential multitasking advantages, it also requires users to adapt to a new way of interacting with the device. The Pro models will maintain the traditional iPhone layout, which may appeal more to consumers who prefer the familiar form factor.
In summary, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are positioned to offer advantages in camera technology, battery life, authentication, optical zoom, and user familiarity. The Ultra, while potentially offering a unique foldable experience, will lack these features. Consumers weighing the trade‑offs between a higher price and the added capabilities of the Pro line will likely find the Pro’s advantages compelling.
Apple has not yet confirmed the release date or pricing for either model. The company is expected to unveil the new iPhones in the coming months, at which point detailed specifications and pricing will be disclosed.
