Dolly Parton, the legendary country music icon and philanthropist, died this week at the age of 80, prompting an outpouring of tributes from around the world. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Parton was born in Sevier County, Tennessee, in 1946, the fourth of 12 children in a family without electricity or running water. She rose to fame in the 1960s and 1970s with hits like "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You," becoming one of the most successful artists in country music history. A Broadway musical based on her life, "Hello, I'm Dolly," is set to open next year.
Parton was also known for her philanthropy. She founded the Imagination Library in 1995, which has delivered more than 332 million books to children in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and Ireland. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to fund research that helped develop the Moderna mRNA vaccine. She also provided financial assistance to victims of wildfires in her home state of Tennessee.
Parton's death was marked by tributes from around the world. Landmarks, including the Empire State Building, the Willis Tower in Chicago, and the Santa Monica Pier Ferris wheel, were illuminated in pink in her honor. The Arthur Ashe Stadium at the U.S. Open played "Jolene," and at Buckingham Palace, the band performed "9 to 5."
Parton's life and career were celebrated for embodying the American dream. She once said, "I had an ambition, and it burned inside of me. It was something I knew would take me out of the mountains." Despite her success, she remained grounded in her roots and committed to giving back to her community.
Parton's death comes as a loss to millions who admired her talent, generosity, and spirit. As the world mourns, her legacy of music, philanthropy, and kindness continues to inspire.
