Delhi police changes IO amid family raises concerns over a hit-and-run case

Delhi Police Reassigns Investigating Officer in Jatin Khanna Hit-and-Run Case After Family Protests

New Delhi, India – The Delhi Police have replaced the investigating officer in the hit-and-run case involving 35-year-old singer Jatin Khanna, who was killed on August 2 near the Mukundpur flyover in northwest Delhi. The decision follows repeated protests by Khanna’s family, who raised concerns about delays in the probe and alleged negligence by the police.

On August 2, Khanna was returning home to Uttam Nagar on his motorcycle when an unidentified vehicle struck him. The accused fled the scene, and police arrived within seven to eight minutes, rushing him to a hospital where he was later declared dead.

Over the past month, Khanna’s family has staged multiple demonstrations outside the Jahangirpuri police station, demanding a fair investigation. On Sunday, during another protest, police acknowledged the family’s complaints by reassigning the case to a new investigating officer.

Khanna’s brother, Rohit Khanna, expressed frustration over the handling of the case, citing delays in medical assistance. He claimed that the initial response by police and emergency services worsened his brother’s chances of survival. “The accident happened at 4 AM. My brother was returning from a Mata Ki Chowki for his daughter’s fourth birthday. He was alive when we reached him, but the investigating officer only allowed an ambulance. It took 20-30 minutes for the ambulance to arrive,” he said.

The family also alleged that crucial evidence, including CCTV footage from the accident site, had not been shared with them. Rohit Khanna stated that the police had not taken statements from eyewitnesses despite his requests. “There are five CCTVs at the spot. How is it possible that no footage has been provided? The IO was rude and didn’t help us,” he said.

Khanna’s wife, Navya, emphasized the family’s persistent efforts to seek answers. “We travel daily from Uttam Nagar to meet the station house officer and the IO. We want to know who killed him and why the CCTV footage hasn’t been shown to us. Is a hit-and-run not a serious crime?” she asked.

Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Yogendra Khokhar confirmed the change of the investigating officer, stating that the new probe would prioritize apprehending the accused. “We have received their complaint and acted on it. The case is now being investigated with urgency to ensure justice for the victim,” he said.
