Christophe Gleizes Imprisoned in Algeria: Call for Release
Journalist Christophe Gleizes, known for Society and So Foot, has been detained in Algeria since June 29, 2025. We urge authorities to secure his release.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has renewed its urgent call for the immediate release of Christophe Gleizes, a French journalist currently detained in Algeria since June 29, 2025. The organization, which monitors press freedom violations worldwide, has characterized Gleizes’ detention as an unjustified restriction on international journalism. France’s foreign ministry has also raised the case with Algerian authorities, seeking clarification on the circumstances surrounding his arrest and detention.
Christophe Gleizes, a veteran reporter who has contributed to publications including Society and So Foot, was taken into custody in Algiers more than two months ago. RSF reports that no formal charges have been publicly disclosed, and no court proceedings have been initiated. The lack of transparency has fueled concerns among press freedom advocates and colleagues about the legal basis for his detention. RSF’s Middle East desk has stated that such prolonged incommunicado detention without charges violates international human rights standards, including those outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Algeria, a key partner in North Africa for European governments and a signatory to multiple human rights conventions, has faced repeated criticism from RSF and other watchdogs over restrictions on press freedom, particularly regarding foreign journalists. The Algerian government has not issued an official statement regarding Gleizes’ case, contributing to a climate of uncertainty. French diplomats continue to press for consular access and legal clarity, but have yet to receive assurances from Algerian authorities.
Press freedom organizations, including RSF and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), have urged Algeria to uphold its international obligations and either release Gleizes or present credible, lawful charges in accordance with due process. Gleizes’ detention comes amid a broader tightening of media regulations in Algeria, where several independent outlets have been forced to close or alter their editorial lines under government pressure.
In response to growing international concern, the French government has confirmed it is treating Gleizes’ case as a priority in bilateral talks with Algeria. The foreign ministry stated that protecting journalists abroad remains a key pillar of France’s human rights diplomacy. Meanwhile, colleagues at So Foot and Society have organized public statements and social media campaigns calling for Gleizes’ swift return to France.
The circumstances of Gleizes’ arrest remain unclear, though local reports suggest he was detained during a routine check while reporting on social issues in Algiers. RSF emphasizes that even in cases where authorities allege administrative irregularities, the prolonged detention of a journalist without charge is unacceptable under international law.
As the case enters its third month, pressure is mounting on Algeria to provide answers and ensure Gleizes’ safe and immediate release. France continues to seek consular access and legal representation for the detained journalist, while press freedom advocates warn that his detention sets a dangerous precedent for foreign correspondents working in the region.
